The characters in “Rip Van Winkle” are exaggerated and strange. For the most part, Irving uses Rip Van Winkle & Dame Van Winkle to show exaggeration in the characters. People in their town view Rip Van Winkle as someone who is friendly & loves to help everyone. His wife, Dame Van Winkle, only saw him as being lazy due to Rip not doing much work around his house. Dame Van Winkle spends most of her time in this story criticizing him and Rip just “….shrugged his shoulders, shook his head, cast up his eyes, but said nothing.” To get away from his wife’s nagging, Rip chooses to go up to the Catskill Mountains with his dog. Dame Van Winkle…

During the time the story took place, American colonist were growing frustrated and angry with British taxation and impossitions on their freedom just as, Rip was growing tired and frustrated with his nagging wife. The arguments the colonies had with the British Parliment ran parallel with the arguments Rip and his wife often had. As the "colonist argued that they had already spent much through local government to maintain their places in the British Empire" (Wikipedia, rev. 8May2013). Dame Van Winkle, would continually complain and nag Rip Van Winkle because of her dissatisfaction in him and his idleness, carelessness, and ruin he was bringing on his family" (p.473).…

Rip van winkle is about a man who goes deep into the woods one day to go hunting. Rip some one calling his name and is led to strange men. "What seemed particularly odd to Rip was, that though these folks were evidently amusing themselves, yet they maintained the gravest faces, the most mysterious silence, and were, withal the most melancholy party of pleasure he had ever witnessed." Rip drinks some ale and falls asleep. He wakes up twenty years later not knowing time has passed by. This strange plotline is very romantic. It would be impossible for someone to fall asleep for twenty years and still be living. It goes against the nature of science. Most of the stories of the time written by men were historical. Although Irving's attempts to make his story seem true by referring to historical documents, it is too strange to be real.…

One of the main conflicts in the story "Rip Van Winkle" is about Rip falling asleep for 20 years. To escape the verbal abuse of his wife that he had to deal with every day, Rip left to the forest with his dog Wolf. While he was enjoying a calm view at the top of the mountain, a strange man yelled his name over and over. The man reached Rip's location and asked him if he could help him with the bags he carried. Rip helped the man and they headed to the mountain torrent. When they got there, they found a group of strange men playing nine-pins. Rip drank some Dutch gin that the men gave him, got really drunk, and fell asleep. When he woke up his dog was missing and his gun had blemished. He decided to go back to his town, but all the routes to get there had changed. He finally got to his town and saw that everything and everyone had changed. Rip even noticed that he had grown a one foot long beard. Nobody recognized him so they thought he was a spy, since he was talking about the king while others were talking about George Washington and the war. A girl approached him and he started asking her who her father and mother were. She said Rip Van Winkle and Dame Van Winkle. Rip figured that was his daughter so he told her that he was her father. She was very happy so see him again and brought him to live with her.…
