Nutrition Portfolio Assignment

The three things I have learned from this class are the different classifications of vitamins (fat and water-soluble) and the importance of each vitamin. This course enabled me to learn about the energy nutrients; Fat, Carbohydrates, Protein, and Alcohol. Although, alcohol isn’t considered to be a nutrient because it interferes with the body’s growth, maintenance, and repair. Also the Renal Diet, from the class presentation assignment. Diets are used to be very essential and to also help with the treatment process.
Some of the personal nutritional habits I learned that I may look and feel healthy, but I’m really not eating healthy. After being introduced to the Diet Analysis Program using the My Plate Guide, I realized that I really need to watch what I eat regularly. I was eating way too many empty calories (165%) and protein (120%). I started to cut back on the soda beverages, and eating fewer sweets as snacks. Also, I added more grains and diary to my meals by drinking more milk, including the flavor milks instead of a soda. I could expect to see my health improve by keep recording my daily food intake and stick to the My Plate guidelines.
I really enjoyed learning ways to improve my health and eating habits. This class gave me a reality check about my diet and the importance of balancing my daily food intake to live a better eating lifestyle. As far lecture, I think using the PowerPoint slides was very beneficial to me on the exams, instead of writing all the time to take notes. My dislikes about the course was the lack of class participation and possible activities during class for us to interact more as a class.

According to my three day diet analysis it seems like my eating habits are poor. Not necessarily that I am consuming too many bad foods but I am not getting the all around nutrients that I need on a daily basis. Sometimes not eating enough. Or ot finding time to eat at all is a big issue in this. Due to my job and the lack of time I have at home it is hard for me to get the nutrients I need on a daily basis. With the target that is shown of six oz. of grains two and a half cups of vegetables, two cups of fruits, two cups of dairy and five and a half oz. of protein foods I fell short in most of the areas that were targeted for me. My biggest two areas of consumption was refined grains and protein.…

I exercise on a regular basis and I try to watch the foods I eat. One only key changes I have made to meet the recommendations from the tracker is to take vitamin supplements. I have started doing this to make sure that my body is receiving all of the vitamins it needs on a daily basis. Even though I already have a pretty good nutrition and exercise plan, there are a few goals I have to assist me in optimizing my good health. One nutritional goal is to increase my water intake. I typically drink water while at work but I often drink soda while at home. In order to reach this goal I will have to stop purchasing soda at the grocery store and replace it with low calorie, low sugar drinks. By not having soda conveniently in my home, I will be more likely to drink healthier options such as water. My second nutritional goal is to track the foods I eat. Tracking the food I consume will help to make sure that I am getting the proper amount of fruits, vegetables, grains, and dairy. To meet this goal I will begin to write down everything I eat throughout the day. I have some physical exercise goals as well. One physical exercise goal is to become more active on a regular basis. I currently workout three days a week and I would like to increase that to at least five days a week. Another physical exercise goal I have for myself is to increase…

Over the course of this week I have learned many things about my eating habits. I found that when I am very busy I tend to eat less and healthier. When I am just sitting around I tend to eat more than necessary and the foods are not as good for me. Using this tracker has really helped me to see what I am consuming, as far as carbohydrates, fats, sugars, proteins, sodium, and total calories. I have also been able to tell that the more active I am the more calories that I burn in a day. Before I started using the tracker I never gave much thought to how many calories I was burning just walking around, cleaning, cooking, and working. My eating habits are not the greatest. This week I went to the beach for a couple of days and my eating habits while we were driving to and from Delaware was horrible. I ate fast food and consumed way to much sodium and sugars. When we were cooking for ourselves and walking around all day my numbers were much better. I did notice using this tracker though that I need to eat more vegetables and proteins, and cut back on my sugars. I have a hard time staying under my daily sugar allotment. Overall, I really do need to improve my eating habits.…

After assessing my health through an internet tool available on the Council for Responsible Nutrition wellness campaign webpage, I have reached several conclusions and understanding of my current general health status. The health assessment tool on the webpage is called “my wellness score card”. The assessment analyzes nutritional choices, use of supplements, habits, exercise, and healthy weight relative to gender, height and age. Prior to this assessment of my lifestyle, I was aware of some of my bad habits but I was under the impression that I did enough to balance it. Once I read the results, I was somewhat shocked! After careful thinking, I believe that finding out where I stand now, even though I suffer from few illnesses, can be beneficial, almost a wakeup call. Being aware of my habits and lifestyle choices is the first step in the right direction toward improving my health status. Below is the graph of my assessment results from the Council for Responsible Nutrition assessment.…
