Difference Between Icd 9 And ICD 10

ICD 9 and ICD 10 have many structural differences ranging from capability for expansion, differences in amount of codes available to use and the differences in alphanumeric coding. I would like to begin by pointing out that unlike ICD 9 in which your rarely use letters with the exception of V and E codes, in ICD 10 you have a alphanumberic code structure to identify diagnoses, causes and treatment codes. The diverisity in code structure doesn't stop there, there is also more room for expansion in coding with ICD 10. The code structure in ICD 9 starts with 3-4 digits and a decimal is placed after the 2nd digit. Where as ICD 10 can be up to 7 characters with no decimals and it's alphanumeric.
