Primacy research and evidence-based practice (EBP) differ in that primary research or nursing research is what engenders EBP therefore you must have the research to produce the EBP. Primary nursing research is disciplined analysis constructed to produce evidence regarding nursing issues such as education, clinical practice guidelines, informatics and nursing administration. Polit and Beck (2017) emphasize that clinical nursing research “guides nursing practice to improve the health and quality of life of nurses’ clients” (P. 3), whereas EBP is defined as the unification of primary research into best practices for nurses along with their …show more content…
In EBP there is external and internal data that can contribute to producing the best evidence. Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt (2015) define external evidence as a “critical appraisal and synthesis of the most relevant and best research to answer a burning clinical question” (p.3). The appraisals and syntheses are generalized and can be utilized in other settings (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015). Internal evidence includes, as the name implies, internal evidence from patient data from within the organization management or quality improvement programs to improve clinical care. Specifically, it is “one’s own clinical expertise, which includes internal evidence generated from outcome management or quality improvement projects, a thorough patient assessment, and evaluation and use of available resources necessary to achieve desired patient outcomes” (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015, p. 3).
Difference between external and internal data in the context of an example.
Patient Satisfaction
External data would include literature searches, qualitative and quantitative research articles addressing patient satisfaction using patient discharge data and analyzing what contributes to a positive or negative
