The Sahara Desert is an area in Africa that has succumbed to the effects of human activities and desertification. This specific desert is home to one of the harshest environments on earth, and has a hot and arid …show more content…
In addition to this deserts extremely high temperatures, rainfall in this area is about 5 inches or less in a year. Ways people have adapted to these problems are by moving from one place to another. This adaptation can enable certain individuals, like the pastoral nomads to find grass and fresh water for their animals to live on for a few trips. Once one area is used up, then the pastoral nomads move to another area that provides the resources they need. This also keeps them from overheating from the desert sun. A quote to support my evidence can be found on page 303, of the textbook, “Geography Alive”, which states, “Tuareg Nomads mover their herds to find water, or a better pasture. The Tuareg depend on their animals for milk. They trade cheese, milk and some meat for the goods they cannot make or grow themselves.” This shows that the Tuareg try to give their herds the best living conditions by moving from place to place to find food and water for them, because they are dependent on these animals for their survival and well being. Palm trees are a sign or symbol that travelers are near an oasis because, palm trees need fertile soil to live and thrive which an oasis can provide. Oases are not always created over millions of years of formation, but by human activity as well. In the past certain individuals who lived in this environment would create oases by digging wells by hand, now using our modern day technology, we use drilling machines to dig deep into the earth to find hidden water. The Sahara Desert has at least 90 known oases and many small ones as well, only large enough to aid one to two families. Many types of local flora and fauna can be found an oases, for example, gazelles and other animals drink the water in an oases, butterflies, crickets and other insects inhabit the oases, garden. The vegetation at an oasis that can be identified are baobab and acacia trees, mixed in with desert shrubs and date palm trees. Certain plants like date palms are essential for live in an oasis because, they can provide food for the people and animals that inhabit an oasis, they can be used to supply wood and other materials for building houses and other materials and, they can be burned for fuel as well. An adaptation that has been created for the use of resources provided by an oasis is, planting cash crops like dates, peanuts, wheat, etc in exchange for other items like money, water and food.
