Difference Between Sleepy Eyes And Grumbling Tummies
Sleepy eyes and grumbling tummies are a common trend in many third period classes. Starvation sets in by the time students head off to fourth period, making it very difficult to concentrate. A break after second period would benefit a number of students who don’t have enough time in the morning for breakfast. Although a break after second period would mean that the school day would be a bit longer, it’s a small price to pay for good nutrition. It is believed that students would be more focused with something substantial in their stomachs: “Children who eat… have increased test scores and the ability to concentrate in class; they also are more alert and creative.” (Sue Gilbert, iVillage.com) In a recent survey taken of students at Vacaville

The American civil war was a period of clash, between the Union under the command of Abraham Lincoln, and the Confederacy (seceded southern slave states), on the issue of slavery. The obtrusive limitation of the current lunch policy lies on two key factors—time and appetite. For one thing, the current lunch time given to students is approximately 30 minutes, not enough time for digesting food with high in fiber and low in calories after the everlasting lunch lines. Students can devoured a pizza and a hamburger expeditiously with few bites whereas students can only nibble away black been burgers, tasteless salad with a drink they disgust with. Not surprisingly, the students from L.A. United School meals are “being rejected in en masse.” Who would want wait a long lunch line for food they annoy? Who would have an appetite to battle with fruits and veggies when they could wait an hour and eat what they savor. Clearly, a successful meal should be the ones that could restore kids’ appetites and reduce eating time. In turn, this may transform student’s life style.…

Learning is the key component when children attend to school, yet the food students are served at school does not give them the ability to do so. To learn, students must have a healthy diet and receive health-giving foods. According to an article by Sarah Mahoney, there are three main types of foods that best help the cognitions and learning abilities of children; including whole wheat sandwiches that help the memory cells of the brain, milk which helps give energy to the body, and fruits that help children feel refreshed and ready to learn throughout the day (Mahoney). If a child was offered these foods daily, it would not only benefit them in school but improve their well-being as well. Without these choices being offered daily, it leaves them choosing unhealthy meals that do not help their learning ability nor their health. Recent studies have demonstrated that nutrition affects students’ thinking skills and health, and suggests that diets high in trans or saturated fats can negatively impact learning and memory skills and can later on lead to negative effects on the cognitive development of school-aged children (Florence). Students losing the development of their learning ability due to lack of nutritious tend to participate in less activities and do less school…

Students often forget things, may they be books, papers, projects, you name it. With longer lunch periods the students would be able to go to their house and pick up any forgotten items. If a student forgets their history book, or maybe an English essay, they could run to their house really fast and pick it up and not have to worry about any late grades or missing assignments. Say a student does not have computer access at home, they would be able to go to the library at lunch and type their assignments, finish any computer work, print something, or do some research for a project.…

The cognitive benefits of that break are astounding! For adults and children alike, breaks are deemed necessary for satisfaction and alertness. Research has also shown that breaks during learning result in a better quality of retention and recall due to the presentation of material being spaced instead of all at once. This research is conducive to what is already known about brain functioning: “that the brain needs downtime to recycle chemicals crucial for long-term memory formation, and that attention involves 90-to110-minute cyclical patterns throughout the day” (Jarrett, 2002). Other theories state that there is a positive correlation between unstructured interaction with peers, and higher results on intelligence tests (Jirikovic, Vansyckle, McIntyre, & Irish, 2005). Aren’t higher test scores the main focus of educators…

Everyone has heard school lunch horror stories, pulling the lunch lady’s facial hair out of a half-eaten cheese sandwich or worse pulling it out of your mouth, but many wonder what really goes on in a public school’s cafeteria. As a future educational professional my greatest goal is students’ success. An important part of children’s success has to do with them being prepared to be successful. They need to be prepared emotionally as well as physically. Having a healthy and fulfilling breakfast and lunch are key parts to this preparation.…

School lunch time lengths from elementary school, middle school, and even high school are on average, about 30 minutes or less. The amount of time given for lunch includes the students leaving the classroom, standing in the lunch line, getting all of the condiments they need, finding a place to sit and actually eating their food. “Some schools have colossal lunch lines, making it extremely difficult for the staff to serve all of the students before the bell rings. This is causing children to go back to class hungry, cranky, and unfocused.” (Bridges)…

According to ods.od.nih.gov, teens need to obtain six hundred IU per day, so the students do not receive enough being inside the class room all day. Leading into the fact that students will gain more responsibly, preparing them for high school, found on prezi.com. Marielle Goldschlag, an eighth grade student stated “I always feel trapped inside of a class room and lunch should be my time to relax, eat, and be free.” Data found on prezi.com, the cons of this proposition are the issues of littering, the student’s time is limited, and more teachers will need to be present. To fix these issues, the students should be supplied with close garbage cans, they should also have priority in the line to the students who are eating inside, and the teachers of both seventh and eighth grade are free during this period so they should be assigned different days, just like car pickup and dropoff. The anticipation of knowing that the teachers will have happier students equaling an easier/less stressed…
