From the results recorded it was identified that activity A and C had exothermic reactions, whilst activity B had an endothermic reaction. Each of the activities had initially begun with 23.4/8/9oC, however, within one minute of adding the 2nd reactants, the results began showing, as seen from the graph. Activity A and C had risen in temperature, with A gaining 4oC and in total of 2 minutes having the temperature of 27.9oC along with C increasing by 2.2oC and within 2 minutes of the experiment having the temperature of 26oC. Activity B however was the anomaly in the test, as the temperature went lower, by 1.9oC as within 2 minutes, the Ammonium Chloride and water had the temperature of 21oC. Furthermore the line graph shows Activity A and C rising to its highest peak, although it eventually reduces. First we chose an unknown metal, in which our unknown was unknown metal 2, the metal was gray and irregular shaped. We setup the calorimeter and got a mass of it just being empty then we got a mass with 30mls of water in it. We found the mass of the water by subtracting the mass of the empty calorimeter which was 49.987g and the mass of the calorimeter with water which was 87.332g and got the mass of just the water 37.345g. The metal was placed in a test tube 5cm high and we got the mass of the empty test tube that was 42.703g and then with the metal in it and it was 72.607g. We heated the 300ml of water to a boil, then placed the metal that was in a tube and waited 10 minutes before we took it out. The temperature of the water before the metal was placed was 20 degrees Celsius, when we put the hot metal into the water and stirred it with the stirring rod it was 29 degrees Celsius, the change of the temperature after the metal was placed was 9 degrees. We ran this experiment twice to compare the results. In the second experiment we found that the mass of the calorimeter and water with 50mls was 100.033g and the empty calorimeter was 50.857g. We subtracted them two and we got the mass of water was 49.176g. The temperature of the water before the metal was placed in was 21 degrees Celsius and then when the metal was heated up for 10 minutes the temperature went up to 28 degrees Celsius. For both these experiments, I found out that the freezing and boiling points of a substance are characteristic properties. The freezing point was proved in experiment 3.2 and the boiling point was proved in experiment 3.4. I know that the freezing point of a substance is a characteristic property because substances that are the same with different masses or amounts, have the same boiling point. For example, people with a pink or orange test tube had the same substance, but with different amounts. They happened to come up with the range of freezing/melting point, 80 degrees Celsius. The people with a green or yellow test tube had the same substance, but also with different amounts. They all got around 53 degrees Celsius. This means that we can identify different substances from others by their freezing point, even if the mass is different. This is a characteristic property.
