Differences Between Picasso And Velazquez

I think there are several similarities and differences in Velazquez and Picasso's works. One difference is that in Picasso’s more colorful version he only portrays the princess. In Velazquez’s more broad viewed version he portrays everyone from the princess down to the lowly servants perfecting the princess in every way imaginable. I think this adds a lot of sympathy for Velazquez’s piece because most people can relate to working for an ungrateful boss. One of the similarities between Velazquez’s piece and Picasso’s piece is the portrayal of the princess. Even though Velazquez’s work of art isn’t as focused on the princess as Picasso’s it is still mainly focused on the princess. Another similarity is the princess face. In both she has the same look on her face. I think it is the “I’m better than people who work hard to help me” face. Another similarity is how they both capture the princess’ personality. In Velazquez’s version the princess and the rest of the people are realistic, but in Picasso’s abstract version it’s more of a cartoon looking character. Although it is not a very detailed cartoon character. Another difference is the perspective. In the Velazquez piece you have a full room view. You can see everyone. While in the Picasso piece it is one person and a hand caring for the person. The Picasso piece in my mind is almost like a child’s perspective. There are several more like, in the Velazquez piece it’s hard to see the princess’ face because of the perspective of the painter, but in the Picasso piece basically all you can see is the princess’ face. The last one is the difference in feeling. The Velazquez piece almost makes you feel sad and depressed because of the lack of color while the Picasso piece is meant to make you feel happy because of all the
