The United States is about your freedom to voice your opinion about how the President and policymakers runs the country, how you feel about everything that affects us in our everyday lives such as taxes, health care, medicine. If the media talks bad about a person then that person’s credibility can be lost very fast. For example, a critical review of a restaurant by the media can make the sales of that restaurant very low; whereas a complimentary review can make their sales skyrocket. This happens to politicians all the time through media bias. Interest group, Moms Against Drunk Driving, can influence people to lobby to get certain laws passed to make our roads safer. If a democratic party is for lower taxes then it can get people to vote for them because that is something that will affect their wellbeing. Whereas, if a republican party is against abortion then individuals or businesses can vote against them because it may be against their religious or moral beliefs. Churches can be against homosexuality, violence, and just over all immorality. These beliefs will affect political views and can change the way people vote and try to influence others. They do so better than most of our public interest groups. This gives them more power than the public; leaving the smaller interest group underpowered. This gives big business more representation by our government than the general public. The fact that the electoral college can completely over rule the popular vote of the American people weakens our democratic elections. What is the point of public opinion, free speech, interest groups and political parties if after all our efforts at the end of the day the electoral college has the final say? I think this is a major weakness in our democracy that need to be fixed. Perhaps we don’t do away with electoral college entirely but instead let the popular vote over rule it if its 60% or greater. Despite these contradicting factors to our democracy we are lucky to live in a country where we are free to form our own public opinion, interact groups, political parties, and lobby.
