In the 1600’s, the New England colony devolved very rapidly. The political, economic, and social development of the colonies was highly influenced by the Puritans, who helped find most of the colonies in the region after emigrating there from England. The Puritans strict values and ideas helped shape the colonies greatly in several ways. They believed in a representative government which later on became an essential part of the United States’ government. Economically, the idea of fair priced goods also came from the Puritans. Strict values in church, religion, and community were all Puritan customs that helped social development in the 1600’s.…

The black veil on Mr. Hooper's face was a symbol for trying to cover up a sin or sins. Whether or not it is to cover up his or everyone else's is never told, but by him wearing this black veil caused him to be very secluded from his congregation and caused a lot of talk and gossip around the town. Even after years of wearing it, while lying on his death bed he still would not take it off. "Still veiled, they laid him in his coffin, and a veiled corpse they bore him to the grave" (p. 401) This just showed how strong Mr. Hooper felt about the veil and its significant meaning. That everyone sins and tries to but them but that sin will remain with them forever.…

In the short story Minister’s Black Veil written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is a story filled with suspense and mystery. It is about a minister that one day decides to wear a black veil upon his face and for years people wondered what was going on. The day came that the minister passed away and even wore that veil to his grave. No one exactly knows why Mr. Hooper wore that black veil. Veils were commonly used by woman and not by men which made it seem old. Mr. Hooper was the type of person to not care about people’s opinion, he was self-assured and knew he didn’t have to explain himself to anyone including his fiancé Elizabeth. Not telling people why he wore that veil cause Mr. Hooper to become isolated for years. People refused to accept the fact that he wore a veil upon his face, there was rumors going around saying that the people’s beloved minister was ashamed of something he had done. Little did they know, they would never find out.…
They were upset, scared, and confused. Before Hooper began to wear the veil, his people thought of him as a great Reverend, and a reasonable man. However after the veil, they thought he was crazy, and said he had no reasoning. Rev. Hooper changed so suddenly on his congregation that they reacted quite negatively. They did not like it, as he had changed a lot. “Are you sure it is our parson?”... “Of a certainty it is good Mr. Hooper”… “I can’t really feel as if good Mr. Hooper’s face was behind that piece of crape”… “I don’t like it”... “He has changed himself into something awful, only by hiding his face.” “Our parson has gone mad!”... Mr. Hooper had the reputation of a good preacher.” (Hawthorne, par. 1-8) Society was unhappy, this is clear. They were not used to change, and did not want it either. He was made out to have used to have been a wonderful Reverend, who turned into a crazy, alienated man. Hooper and his congregation were both greatly affected by the veil. Not only did it affect them all mentally, emotionally, and slightly physically, but it affected their moral values. “Rev. Hooper… hiding it from his congregation, who quickly are unnerved by this action, wondering why he has done so… not only does it affect the other members of the community, but it profoundly affects him as well, serving both external and deep internal conflicts. However, the veil does little but alienate Hooper from others… the veil shuts out…
Rationalism. A form of religion where instead of believing in a higher been, Science and reasoning are what is lived by. Being able to prove and identify things in life that make rational sense is what is used instead of worshipping some form of "God." The very opposite goes for Puritanism. Worshipping a higher been that made the earth and the universe and everything in it including yourself is what's considered to be the religion of the puritans. Both sides see completely different perspectives in life and each group lives in different ways according to their beliefs.…

People wear masks to hide their true identity. This is evident in the story when the minister walks out to the congregation for the first time with the black veil on. “I can’t really feel as if good Mr. Hooper’s face was behind that piece of crepe,” said the sexton. In this section of the story, the congregation is very confused of the actions of their Reverend Mr. Hooper. He was known as the most “religious” person in the town, and now he has a black veil on that symbolises death and darkness. This theme is also evident when members of the church stated their opinion about the veil. “I don’t like it, he has changed himself into something awful, only by hiding his face,” and old women muttered.…
Religions are beliefs which can change and evolve. They intertwine to connect together to mend a new religion. Puritanism is a belief in God, which you go to church to atone for your sins and stay pure. Puritans did not only believe that everyone is born with a sin that was called original sin but also that a saved soul can be taken by Satan because they fell into temptation. Deism is the belief of God as a Clockwork system and left the responsibility to follow the laws created by God. Deists used logic and reason; the idea of original sin was enslavement of the masses to priests. Transcendentalism is the belief that to be one with God is to be one with nature.Transcendentalists believed living in the moment was more important than living…
