Differences In Cross Country
At Villanova, we believe that it is our similarities that make us strong, but our differences that make us stronger. Please tell us about a relationship that you have with someone who is different from you and how that has changed who you are today. The first few weeks of Cross Country were some of the hardest of my life. I was completely new to the sport after being persuaded to give it a shot by my more aerobically inclined friends. I had my reservations before I started, as I told my friends that I was not the running type and that I wouldn’t even last a week but I still reluctantly agreed to try it out. The first few runs were the most agonizing pain I had ever endured. I was a fawn among stags. I ran workouts minutes slower than our top runners . After finally finishing the day’s run and regrouping with the rest of the team, it seemed like the other runners barely broke a sweat. When I returned to the school from practices, I would go straight to icing my aching legs and recovering from the day’s grueling workout discouraged over my slow times. Thankfully someone was there to help. Jose, a junior, was essential to keeping me focused on improving. Jose had a way of …show more content…
Jose was very different than most of the runners on our team. Most of our team were stereotypical cross country runners: middle to upper-class white kids that are too lanky to play football and too uncoordinated to play soccer.Jose completely reversed this stereotype in many ways. Compared to the stature of the other runners, Jose was like an Olympic weightlifter standing among the ping pong team. While Cross Country was the main sport of almost our entire team, Jose did it to stay in shape for club soccer. While most kids had their parents income to rely on, Jose had to work two jobs to be able to support his family. Despite all of these differences, Jose was was friends with nearly every member of our

There were many times I wanted to quit or give up but I didn’t even though I really wanted to at points. I remember the last three meets, they were the best. They were in Shenandoah, Atlantic, then Clarinda. Shenandoah was my favorite course i'm not sure why maybe it was the trees and the paths we had to run of were fun, it was shady most of the places and filled with plants and trees on a dirt path. At Atlantic it was pouring rain all day and when it came time for the middle schoolers to run it was muddy and people were falling at the start, everyone got super muddy and wet. Then in Clarida it was the last meet and I was super nervous right when we got there I knew it was gonna be hard. When we walked part of the course there were corn fields and trees on the outside of it. When we got up to the start I was nervous I said I saw scared for the other ones well this one was 10 times worse but the gun went off and we ran and finished, then it was over. The season went fast, it was long but fast at the same time. It was fun scary, hard, but…

Growing up Alex was a multi-sport athlete, which takes lots of discipline and effort. She played soccer, volleyball, and ran in track. She started to play club soccer in between 12 and 13. In an interview she said, “ I tried out for a club but I wasn’t on the team. I was able to go to practice with them but the coach just wasn’t messing with me, so it was a bad first year of club.” She didn’t give up then, the next year she was on the club team Cypress Elite when she was 14. Being involved…

I attempted to run longer before I stopped and began walking. I paced myself and even endeavored to keep up with some of the faster people on the team. Gradually, week after week, I could see myself progressing from a time in the mid-forties, to the low-forties, and finally into the thirties range. Between the first meet and regionals, we had about six more races, and regrettably, I came in last place in three of them. However, I refused to let my losses stand in the way of my motivation to get better. I kept training and before I knew it, it was the day of the regional…

Participating on the Sutton High School cross country team has been one of the most rewarding yet stressful experiences of my life. For the past five years the Sutton cross country team has been a second home to me and season after season I return thirsting to vanquish a competitive fire. Although I'm ecstatic about competing this year, I was not always this happy about running. Five years ago I decided to try out for a sports team that involved less hand eye coordination (seeing how I have none) and tried out for the cross country team at my school. Almost immediately did I find out that a simple task like running could become much more strenuous not only on my legs and lungs but on the mind. While my body adjusts to the challenges of dirt…

“Every day is a good day when you run.” Kevin Nelson, who wrote The Runner's Book of Daily Inspiration, could not have been envisioning the mercurial weather of Rhode Island. As a three-sport athlete in Cross Country, Indoor Track and Outdoor Track, there is a certain commitment that one must have to be able to compete year-long in New England. Runners will often sugarcoat their feelings about running by saying it’s thrilling, satisfying and even fun. Although it can be personally fulfilling, it takes a lot of hard work, determination and perseverance to be an accomplished runner.…

For the past six years of my life, I ran for the Eureka Springs High School cross country team. After graduation, I was given the opportunity to run for the Golden Suns cross country team at Arkansas Tech University. In a matter of six months, my cross country experiences and habits were changed. Often times, there are similarities between two subjects such as these, but in this case, only the differences are obvious. There are changes in not only the way that I run, but the team I ran with, the coach I ran under, and the person I am when I run. These changes have caused me to see what I can do as a runner and a college student.…

It was a scorching hot October day in Palatine, Illinois. As my team and I warmed up for our cross country race we could feel the sun fry us. The Palatine Meet of Champions is always a competitive meet and this was the last time I would toe the line there. I was nervous. Thoughts started rushing through my head and I tried to stay calm. As the day went on, it was time to go to the line and start the race. Right before the gun went off;, I took a deep breath and closed my eyes. I visualized success. The gun went off and I bolted for the bottleneck. As we came to the last mile, I was in great position. I started making my way to the front and I felt like I was flying. Although I did not win, I placed fifth against many nationally ranked runners. I felt like I was on top of the world. At that moment I knew I wanted to pursue the dream of running collegiately. Later that week, I received a call from Coach Chorny from Miami University telling me that he would like me to run as a RedHawk. I was hooked after my official visit and later that month, I signed my letter of intent. My journey was set to continue.…

Throughout my life, I’ve experienced both competence and incompetence. One of the times that I experienced incompetence was when I began to run in my freshmen year of High School. Having played other sports which were less tiring and fatiguing, I was met with an instant fatigue inducing and enervating sport, with no half-times or breaks. The obstacles I faced made it harder for me to be a good and capable runner, and I lagged behind the…

I used to gag at the thought of running eight hundred meters. There I stood with my heart racing, ready to run five kilometers. To everyone else, this was an unimportant meet that even the coach said he did not care about. It was for me, however, more terrifying than losing my mom in the grocery store when I was a child. My first meet and all I could think of was my speed or lack thereof. I did not have distance spikes. I did not have a muscle roller. All I had was my heart in my throat paired with running shoes. Since the day before, my blood pressure had been rising and continued to do so.…

The course was three weeks of torture. The only rest I had began around 6pm when we were finished training, and the weekend. Georgia was as hot as Hades and we ran around eight miles a day, every day. Walking was prohibited no matter who you were. Running everywhere was the only option, and if you fell out three times you were done and they would send you home. I had countless bruises all over my body and I was so sore I could barely stand up. I constantly prayed for strength and used a tube of icy hot a day.…

October 29, 2016 I was competing in the IHSA cross country sectional meet in an effort to advance my team to the state finals which was the following week. I finished the race and was immediately rushed to an urgent care facility where I found out I had pneumonia. The week leading up up to the race I was home sick several days with an upper respiratory infection but knew I had to get back to training in order to support my team as I was the number three runner. Seven days later I raced at the State Meet still severely hindered by the effects of pneumonia, and ran minimally one minute slower than what I had trained to run. As a runner, the sport is year round, with competitive training beginning in January for track through summer into the…

Later on, during my days in school and high school I got the chance to expand my soccer skills. I was a regular member whenever a soccer team was selected for any type of competition. Soccer, had a wide range of influence on my personal, social and educational life. It is soccer which taught me what leadership is and why team work is so important. I was so prolific and professional with my defensive skills that my name became popular as the Great Wall of Orchid (my college) and hence no one had any kind of doubts choosing me as the captain of…
