Different Characteristics of Jing mei And Her Mother Causing Conflict among Them. There are many reasons causing the conflicts among Jing mei Woo and her mother,
Suyuan Woo, such as the different attitudes of Jing mei and her mother towards American dream and their generation gap. However, the serious conflicts between Jing mei and Suyuan are also caused by their obviously distinct characteristics including the disobedience and the independence of Jing mei contrasting with Suyuan’s restrictiveness and expectations toward her daughter.
The first obvious conflict results from the restrictiveness of Suyuan and the disobedience of Jing mei. Suyuan is a very strict mother. She wants Jing mei to follow her commands and her desire because she wants her to have a better life. For instance, she forces Jing-mei to test the talent to be a prodigy. After she watches the Ed Sullivan Show, a talent show on television, she tells Jing mei that she will send her to learn piano with Mr. Chong because she hopes Jingmei to be successful as a famous pianist.
Also, she gives Jing mei the schedule of piano lessons and practices without asking for the willingness of her daughter at all. Nevertheless, the characteristic of Jing mei and her mother is totally contrastive. Jing mei is a very disobedient and defiant girl. She always does something against the commands and the expectations of her mother because she does not like the ways that her mother wants her to do and Jing mei just does the things that she loves. In addition, she is not concerned about the punishment from her mother at all. For example, Jing mei tries to reject to learn piano with Mr.Chong and she doesn’t want to go on the
TV show though her mother offers her a million dollars. Moreover, though she has to learn piano with Mr.
