Different Types of Horror-film Viewers
Horror films have always been a popular genre among the movies. You might wonder: If the film is so scary and terrifying, why are people still willing to spend time and money to be frightened? What are they thinking when they are watching? Generally speaking, these people can be divided into three categories depending on their different motivations.

The first type of horror movie fan is ‘’Excitement seekers’’. This kind of person is usually bold and takes this amusement as a way to relieve their stress in life. The scarier the film is, the more excited they feel. They are straight-faced when the audience is screaming at a particular scene because they do not find anything frightening. As the ‘’dreadful level’’ is getting to the peak, this is the time for them to shrill (while others are senseless because they have already been scared to death). However, it is not because they find the plot horrifying, but because they finally find something REALLY ghastly. Thus, their stress and unpleasant emotions are also swept away at that moment, just as the archaeologists who had been searching for the antiquities for a long period of time and finally found the real treasure would do.

The second type of horror film viewer is ‘’Guts-trainees’’. Due to their timidity, they want to watch horror films to boost their courage. When these people are watching horror films, they often invite a bunch of friends (with some timid while others bold) going together. Why? To begin with, the more people accompany them, the more relieved they feel because they find security. Furthermore, those who are bold will sometimes make jokes about the plots, making them feel not so terrifying. For instance, when a long-haired ghost climbs out slowly from a girl’s television, the joking person might say, ‘’Ha, ha! It would be so awkward if the television were stabled on the wall far away from the floor. That way when the ghost climbs out, it will fall and die on the scene! ’’ These illogical words are so funny that those timid people will forget the scary feelings and laugh out loud with the crowd. As time passes, those timid people can regard the horror film as a comedy. The more films they watch, the bolder they will eventually become.

The third type is the ‘’Great pretenders’’, which means these people dare to watch horror films in reality and have never been terrified by any dreadful scene, but pretend to be timid so as to show that they need protection. Take my friend for example. Watching horror movies during free time is one of her hobbies. Yet, if you do not understand her and only look at her appearance, you can hardly imagine that this little girl likes to watch horror films because she looks so graceful and quiet. She has a boyfriend who also likes horror movies. However, she told me that whenever they watch horror films, she is the one who is screaming and crying. ‘’My boyfriend always held me in his arms when he saw my response, trying to calm me down. What he does not know is that I was actually acting. Come on, who will be scared by that kind of plot? It is not even terrifying. I only want to let him know that I need his protection and affection. ’’ So insidious, isn’t she? However, this has become a common flirting trick for many couples. Recently, going to the theater to watch horror movies has become one of the most popular amusements for couples!

After reading this, you might understand more why people watch horror movies. Next time when you see your timid friends watching horror movies, do not be so surprised. Perhaps they are trying to train their guts, or make a wishful thinking sneakily.

Horror movies test us on our fears, desires and mentality. As from the king’s thesis, “the reason we all crave horror movies is because we are all mentally ill”. That gives a point that we need to watch horror movies just to release our tension. Some people prefer horror movies for a different reason. They want to prove to themselves that they are brave and that they fear nothing. People always try to prove certain things true when they are not that sure of themselves. Even though they choose to watch these things, the images are still disturbing for many people. But people have the ability to pay attention as much or as little as they care to in order to control what effect it has on them, emotionally and…

In the essay “Why We Crave Horror Movies” Stephen King discusses why horror movies are so appealing. We are all mentally ill; however, some of us are better at hiding our “insanity” (emotions) than others. King compares the thrill of seeing horror films to going on a roller coaster ride and says that we like to watch them to show others that we aren’t afraid, “that we can ride this roller coaster.” We also go to view these horror movies to relax, release our emotions, and have ‘fun’ which is a “very peculiar sort of fun” considering what we find as amusing, are seeing other people being killed. For some, horror movies give the audience a sense of relief because the levels of irrationality are being “extended so rarely.” Which brings King’s…

In his article “Why We Crave Horror Movies,” published in the December 1981 issue of Playboy Magazine, thriller author Stephen King uses a sarcastic but menacing tone to explain why people watch horror films. In the very first sentence of the article, King shows that we are all insane to some degree; we are all mentally ill, but some can hide it better than others (King 222). Why do you spend so much time and money going to the cinemas to see horror movies? We go simply to show that we are not afraid. Great horror films cause us to bring out our inner children, “…seeing things in pure blacks and whites…good versus evil” (King 223). The author also displays how the creepy, dark scenes of these gruesome adventures create a sense of normality in our own lives; seeing characters being chased by a creature with a chainsaw makes our lives seem much better. King also argues that everyone has two kinds of emotions: positive and negative. During childhood, everyone is taught the differences between the two with positive reinforcements (i.e. graham crackers, and smiles) and negative reinforcements (i.e. spankings and time outs) (King 223). Horror movies allow us to release negative or anti-civilization emotions in a manner in which society accepts them. In his article, King uses picturesque and figurative language to explain why people watch horror movies.…

Horror and thriller are a long standing favorite media type of our kind. A good scare that lingers in our minds sticks with us in ways other genres do not. The interest can span through movies and novels which both deliver results in different ways. Horrors and thrillers also affect our bodies while watching, though also differently. The reasons of why we like to be scared continue to be studied, but a few theories have emerged that are all partially accepted. Horrors and thrillers stimulate both our bodies and minds because they remain a mystery as to why we like them, they have helped us evolve, and they demand our attention.…

The horror genre is perhaps one of the most identifiable aspects of the American film industry. So established is the genre that for many watching their first truly scary movie has become a rite of passage into adolescence. Though the horror genre has changed and evolved as have the times, the phenomenon of experiencing that first horror movie, or any good horror, is timeless and ageless. Even the location of this experience has changed but no matter whether a horror movie is experienced at a drive in movie, a movie theater, or at home, most people, old and young, can recall exactly what their first horror was, with whom they watched it, and where they were.…

According to Mr. King, horror movies appeal to all that is worst in us. The author explains how people tend to pay money from their pockets in order to buy the uncomfortable feeling of being scared. In one hand, some people do it in order to display some kind of superiority among others; proving that they do not have fear for anything.
