One type of love shown throughout the play is unrequited love. Demetrius and Helena show this relationship multiple times in this play. One example is shown on page 58, line 188, where Demetrius says, “ I love thee not, therefore pursue me not.” Helena responds to that on line 195 where she says, “ You draw me, you hard- hearted adamant.” This clearly shows that Demetrius does not love Helena therefore Helena loves Demetrius.Another example is on page 60, line 212, where Demetrius says, “ For I am sick when I do look …show more content…
Lysander and Hermia show this relationship throughout the play. Examples that show this is on page 25, line 53 and 54, where Hermia’s father, Egeus says, “Demetrius is a worthy gentlemen,” and Hermia debating, “So is Lysander.” Lysander says on page 27, line 95 and 96, “ You have her father's love, Demetrius; let me have Hermia’s. Why don’t you marry him?” This shows that Lysander and Hermia have a deep relationship and even when Hermia’s father refuses Hermia to marry Lysander, they eloped. There love was never accepted by anyone but finally there love succeeds in the end.
Parental love is also expressed in the play. Hermia and Egeus have a relationship of father and daughter. The relationship of parental love is shown in the beginning of the play. Egeus is shown as a very strict father as he refused Hermia to marry Lysander on page 23, where he gives a complaint about Hermia. However, he chose these decisions for his daughter’s good as he trusted Demetrius and thought Demetrius was good for Hermia. Overall, Egeus wanted to make Hermia’s decisions as he loved Hermia but sometimes you have to listen to your daughters decisions.
