The play "Othello" was about a noble Moor, Othello that was in love with a woman named Desdemona. In the Movie "O" the characters name is Odin and that are similar in many ways. Odin (Mekhi Phifer) is a superstar basketball player that is best friends with Hugo (Josh Hartnett). They play on the same basketball team and Odin is the only black student at his school. In the play "Othello" he is the only black person around that is noble. This is one of the similarities that the play and the movie have. Another similarity is that Othello promotes Cassio instead of Iago due to his breeding. In the movie Odin wants to share his most valuable player award with someone else besides Hugo. In both the play and the movie Iago/Hugo gets extremely upset with Othello/Odin and this starts the hatred towards Othello/Odin.
In the play and the movie the hatred towards Othello/Odin is so fierce. Iago/Hugo betrays his so called friend Othello/Odin. Iago/Hugo does not care who gets hurt in the process of destroying Othello/Odin. In the play and the movie Iago/Hugo is very envious of Othello/Odin, because he gets a lot of attention from everyone. Iago does not deceive Othello by himself he has help from his friend Roderigo. This is very similar to the movie "O" because Hugo is helped by his friend as well. They both mislead Othello into believing Desdemona is having an affair with Cassio. Othello is very trustworthy to his friend Iago and starts to believe what he is being told is true, even though he does not bother to ask Desdemona personally. Othello/Odin begins to believe Iago/Hugo that Desdemona is having an affair because Iago gets a hold of a handkerchief that Othello/Odin gives to Desdemona, which was given to Othello/Odin by his grandmother. It was a symbol in both the movie and the play. Othello/Odin finds out that Desdemona does not have the handkerchief in her possession he begins to assume that what he is hearing from Iago/Hugo is true. Once Othello/Odin begins to believe that Desdemona is unfaithful he starts to see things. Othello is getting pictures in his head of this friend Cassio making love to Desdemona and he begins to get angry. This is all apart of Iago's/Hugo's plan to destroy Othello/Odin.
Towards the end of the play Othello has a plan with Iago to kill Desdemona while she is in bed. They also have a plan where Roderigo and Cassio kill each other. Desdemona starts to plea with Othello for her life. Desdemona is telling Othello that she would never even think about having and affair with anyone. Othello starts to suffocate Desdemona and she stops breathing. Emilia tells Othello that Desdemona did not have an affair with Cassio and she also tells Othello that Iago was just putting thoughts in his head. Othello starts to find out that this was all apart of Iago's plan to destroy him. Iago tries to stop Emilia from telling Othello about what he has been doing to mislead Othello. Iago then kills Emilia and Othello then knows that Iago has betrayed him. This is when Roderigo is killed and Cassio is wounded. Cassio walks in the room and Othello pleads for his mercy. Othello then stabs Iago and lets him suffer. Othello at this point could not live since he wrongfully killed his true love so he takes his own life. The movie and the play are similar in many ways, like the names, story lines, the way people die and who dies.
The only differences between the movie and the play is that the movie is taken place in the year 2001 and it is portrayed in a very up-beat and new style. The movie is placed in the present time and the characters names are sort of altered. The movie is based in present time and made so others can relate to the movie and also compare it in many ways. Giraldi Cinthio, whom had written an Italian story in 1565, which Shakespeare bases his play Othello on. The play which is taken place in Venice was a big tourist attraction to people from Africa gave the land a diverse nature. He chooses Venice as the setting of the play to show his imagination. In the movie the characters are in high school and are just dating, whereas in the play they are married and are handling military and adult issues. The only big difference is that in the movie the characters do not talk with the same dialect. In the play they talk with a European dialect. In the movie they do not.
In conclusion you can see that there are many similarities and differences within the movie and the play. The play written by William Shakespeare and the movie written by Brad Kaaya shows the great work of both men.

Iago is an evil person but that is all he is guilty of being. Othello was a proven warrior and was respected by high ranking officials because of his proven leadership. However, Othello was a bad judge of character and exercised poor judgment throughout the play by blindly and naively believing Iago’s lies. He did not trust the people that truly loved him and were most loyal to him. This character flaw was exploited masterfully by Iago, to the point that Othello became insanely jealous of the perceived affair between Desdemona and Cassio.…

I agree with the statement as his intention are sinister and pure evil. Iago reason with the audience saying he only doing this because Othello slept with his wife even though it is not confirmed, ‘I know not if’t be true’. This shows that he have little faith in his wife or using this as an excuse to hate Othello. He uses Desdemona kindness and innocent to create a trap for the other characters to fall into. Iago is using his jealousy and anger as an excuse to lash out evil. He is almost like searching for reasons in order to be able to hurt Othello, genuine or not.…

Othello, a tragic play where a man named Othello meets his downfall when he allows another man to play mind games with him. Since this plays tragic ending is quite famous, a movie called "Othello" was created in 1995. The director of this play wanted to not only keep the movie as close to the play as possible, but also have a unique way of getting the plays message across to the audience. The difference we see between the play and the movie is how they interpreted the character Iago and Othello by the way the director uses movie tools and Othello's ethnicity.…

Although the movie “O” is a production based on Shakespeare’s “Othello”, several differences exist between the two such as women’s social status, Iago’s personality change, and the type of language employed by the characters. Desi plays a strong woman who won't let any man put her down. She stands up to Odin several times during the movie, showing that twentieth century women have higher status in society than they did in Shakespeare's time. In the movie, Desi assertively says, “If you want to be with me don’t ever talk like that to me again, ever!” Desdemona seems much more compliant to her husband's demands, even when she knows that she is going to die. Rather than run, she goes to her bedchamber and gets ready for bed, perhaps suspecting that it will be her last night alive. At the beginning of the play she declares just how loyal she is to Othello by saying “to you [father], I am bound for life and education; I am hitherto your daughter: but here's my husband, and so much duty as my mother showed to you, preferring you before her father, so much I challenge that I may profess Due to the Moor my Lord”(Hall,). Desdemona knows her place in society and that is that she should be loyal to her husband or else she has been an unworthy wife. Iago’s character changes drastically in the movie compared to Shakespeare’s play. He would be considered the perfect villain in the play. He never seems to get fazed when he destroys Othello and Desdemona's relationship, when he makes Othello go crazy or when he kills Rodrigo: “ My medicine, work! Thus credulous fools are caught”(Hall, 124). There are two major motives that drive Iago to destroy Othello’s life. The first being his hatred for Othello for not promoting him. His second motive is his desire for importance in society and Othello is a human being that is blocking his pathway to glory. His character in “O”, Hugo, is a little bit different. He is trying…

In William Shakespeare’s Othello, the characters’ personalities and motivations influence the plot heavily. Iago is driven by his jealousy of Cassio and his desire to exact revenge on Othello. Othello’s trusting nature leads to his undoing in the play. Iago takes advantage of how he’s seen in the eyes of those around him to carry out his plans. Although Othello is the protagonist of the play and Iago is the antagonist, the two characters are not the ultimate portrayals of good and evil. Othello is not a war between good and evil, but instead a demonstration on how destructive jealousy and gullibleness can be.…
