Difficult Questioning: New Age Torture
Extraordinary rendition is when suspects are taken prisoner and are transported back to their nation for questioning, which is where various groups question our controlled interrogations that are safeguarded by specific guidelines and orders. I personally believe that there can be no victory without some form of sacrifice.
To clearly define what extraordinary rendition is: “When a government or agency abducts and/or transports a suspect to another state for trial where they could be treated inhumanely, without first pursuing the proper legal channels.” (What is Extraordinary Rendition? 1). Although its primary purpose is to protect our nation and allies, we cannot control the actions of another nation when we deliver the suspect to the country in which they are wanted. Although the CIA was created in 1946 by President Truman for gathering intelligence during World War II, its purpose has endured for the past 67 years. Many human rights groups think that extraordinary rendition is as common as the morning post. This is not so: “Both the Congress and Executive branch oversee the CIA’s activities, which engages in covert action, only at the President’s discretion and direction” (Extraordinary rendition 2). The CIA only tracks and gathers information on U.S citizens if there is a legitimate reason to believe that the suspect is or possesses information sensitive to national security. Some of the techniques used by the CIA were sexual harassment and sleep deprivation to name a couple. One of the most creative operations where the CIA caught terrorists abroad, so were out of our jurisdiction, which in turn meant handing them over to a country for enhanced interrogation.
