Osmosis and Diffusion Lab Osmosis is a process where molecules pass through a semi permeable membrane from a less concentrated solution into a more concentrated one, equalizing the concentrations on each side of the membrane. Diffusion is the spreading of something more widely.During the osmosis and diffusion lab I tested what happens to a fresh egg when osmosis and diffusion across membranes. The eggs were placed in vinegar, distilled water, and then lastly syrup. The eggs were weighed every day to see if they got heavier or lighter. The water moved into the egg. This is because there was more solute in the egg than water. Not only did the vinegar grow the eggs, but it also was able to remove the calcium shell around the eggs. Vinegar is made of acetic acid and water and the acidity in the vinegar was able to dissolve the calcium shell. After the vinegar the eggs were placed in distilled water. Being placed in the distilled water also made the eggs larger, and less distilled water left in the jar. There was less solute concentration in the egg than the water. Like the vinegar, the distilled water was absorbed by the egg, and moved into it. After remaining in both the water and vinegar the egg was larger after remaining in the water. This is because the distilled water expands the shell. Water not only expands the shell of a egg, but it is also used to sprinkle fresh vegetables at markets. This is because water is hypotonic to the plant cells. Water has fewer solutes and a higher concentration of water than the inside of the plant cells. Causing more water to diffuse into the plant cells than the amount of water that diffuses out of the cells. More water inside the cells makes them nice and firm, and more appealing

    Diffusion and Osmosis are two concepts that go hand in hand with each other. Diffusion is simply described as the movement of a substance from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration. In another words, the substance will move down its concentration gradient which is “the region along which the density of a chemical substance increases or decreases” (Campbell Biology pg. 132). If you understand the concept of diffusion then osmosis is a very simple process. It can be defined as the diffusion of water across a permeable membrane.
