Dignity as the Main Factor in To Kill a Mockingbird
In Harper Lee's "To Kill A Mockingbird" dignity is a main factor to the characters who gather enough courage to face their greatest fears, Atticus Finch, Tom Robinson and Ms. Dubose portray this more than any other characters. Atticus accepts a case to defend a black man against the pressures of a racist community, knowing it's the right thing to do. Tom Robinson asks for Atticus' defence although the verdict is almost indefinitely against him just for being a black man. He will not let the society win without a fight for himself against the prejudice and racist ways of Maycomb county. Lastly Ms. Dubose's battle to overcome her morphine addiction before her death demonstrates strength and courage against a struggle from within. These three characters take on battles with society and from within. Facing fears by showing courage and keeping dignity.

A black man wrongly accused of raping a white women does not stand a chance in the criminal justice system of Maycomb county and Tom Robinson is aware of that. Although he will not go down without a fight. Tom Robinson confronts his fears and shows courage by getting a lawyer to defend himself. Tom knows the jury is plotted against him but by getting a lawyer he proves he will not give up and will fight for the truth, displaying real courage. For example ; "Real courage...(is not) man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do"(Lee, 116). Tom knows the odds are against him but follows through anyway because he knows the truth and will not let a prejudice society dictate otherwise. Tom faces society and a great fear of standing up to a white community, with courage and his own dignity to keep him fighting for.

Tom Robinson's case was not one to be easily accepted in a town as prejudice such as Maycomb and although the town is strongly against the idea of defending or believing a black man Atticus Finch accepts Toms case knowing the society would not approve. Atticus courageously ignores the talk of the town and takes Tom on as a client, because he knows it's the right thing to do. And for a man like Atticus he would not be able to keep his dignity if he did not. Atticus understands that this could put his social status in jeopardy but follows through anyway. For example; "... There's been some high talk around the town to the effect that I shouldn't do much about defending this man"(100). Atticus is explaining to Scout how taking a case such as this one is highly frowned upon in Maycomb but he took it anyway despite the towns opinions because it is the morally right thing to do. Atticus is telling Scout he would not be able to " hold up my head in town, I couldn't represent this county in the legislature. I couldn't even tell you it Jem not to do something again" (100). Atticus is able to keep his dignity by accepting Toms case.

Lastly Ms. Dubose is a great example of using courage to overcome fears of her addiction. Ms. Dubose set a goal to conquer her morphine addiction before she dies, a task such as this takes strength and will power greater than any other character in this novel. For example; "when you're sick as she was, it's all right to take anything to make it easier, but it wasn't all right for her. She said she meant to break ready of it before she died and that's what she did"(111). Ms. Dubose refuses to take morphine to ease the pain of cancer in order to beat her addiction. Immense courage is taken to do this so Ms. Dubose can die with dignity.

With massive courage Atticus Finch, Tom Robinson and Ms. Dubose keep their dignity while facing their fears. Atticus not only keeps his dignity by being able to say he tried to defend a black man in a town where others turned their backs. Tom Robinson faces the town despite his race to fight for what's right and to not be convicted of a crime he did not commit. And Ms. Dubose who fights a battle from within to die free of addiction. Not only do all characters grasp success while facing their fears, they keep their dignity as well.

Courage is characterized as mental or moral strength to surpass notions of fear. As demonstrated by Atticus Finch and Mrs Dubose in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, the development of courage gives the character’s strength and courage to hold their heads high, while fearing none. Harper Lee depicts the theme of courage incalculable amount of times, detailing courage as “ when you know you’re licked before you being, but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.” (Chapter 11, Page 124) All of the characters have an alternate kind of perspective of what courage is exactly, which will be examined in depth.…

Being a Black man in Maycomb, Alabama was difficult; Maycomb was a racist town with people who did not want the Blacks to be equal to the Whites. People discriminated Robinson’s race to the point where his race was what defined his character. The Whites in Maycomb had a mentality that all blacks were not to be trusted. This affected Tom Robinson because during his rape trial his lawyer, Atticus Finch states “. . . You know the truth, and the truth is this: some Negroes lie, some Negroes are immoral; some Negro men are not to be trusted around women—black or white. But this is a truth that applies to the human race and to no particular race of men.” [Lee, 48] Atticus was trying to say that we need to judge people as individuals rather than by their race. Robinson’s race caused him to be discriminated against by the Whites in Maycomb, in particular Bob Ewell. Bob Ewell had seen that his daughter had kissed a Black man and was very upset. He said "I seen that black nigger yonder ruttin' on my Mayella!" [Lee, 84] Because Robinson…

In Harper Lee’s novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” racism is a common thread in the community and is never more apparent than in this chapter. Tom Robinson is subjected to an unfair disadvantage throughout this novel, from the mob that comes after him at the Maycomb county jail to the results of his trial. Atticus states in chapter 10, “it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird,” this comes back into play as Tom’s innocence is constantly ignored because of his skin color. Tom Robinson may be the minority but it should not make him any less innocent than any white man on the witness stand. It is a distinct aura throughout Tom’s trial that he is not innocent until proven guilty, solely because of he is black. Across the plot Atticus is constantly…

One may find the denotation of dignity throughout the entirety of To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee seeping from the characters written on the pages within. Someone who reacts without becoming less of their true selves and continues to believe in themselves when faced with hardships and the cruel realities of the world portrays significant dignity. Atticus Finch represents dignity throughout the novel and amplifies this characteristic during the case of Tom Robinson. Although the majority of the white population in the county of Maycomb despised the idea of Atticus defending Tom, especially Bob Ewell, Atticus continued to live his life the way he always had: the same in his home as on the streets. While he received horrific criticism, which…

Imagine having to do something in which you knew you would fail but you did it anyway. Atticus Finch does this in Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus demonstrates one of the main themes in the novel, which is “courage is doing what is right even when the odds of succeeding are poor”. Atticus does this by defending Tom Robinson, a black man who has his odds stacked against him only because of his skin color. Atticus faced much backlash, from other whites for defending Tom. Since Tom was a black man, Atticus was doomed to lose, but Atticus did it anyway because it was the right thing. It took courage from Atticus to take Tom’s case because he knew that either way the case went, he would be hated by the fellow whites in Maycomb. Lastly, Atticus defended Tom because he knew that Bob Ewell had beaten his daughter, and the fact that Tom raped Mayella was fabricated. Atticus had the courage to defend Tom, not only to protect him, but to protect the law.…

“The courage of life is often a less dramatic spectacle than the courage of a final moment, but it is no less a magnificent mixture of triumph and tragedy. A man does what he must-in spite of personal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures-and that is the basis of all morality” (John F. Kennedy). Courage is demonstrated in the Pulitzer Prize winning novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. In this story, Atticus Finch finds inner strength to defend an innocent black man of a horrible crime against a white girl in a small Alabama town filled with racism and prejudice. In the realistic fiction novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, the story shows that people express courage in many different…

Integrity is having a standard of morals and ethics, and living by them. It is a willingness and ability to do the right thing even when it is hard. The story To Kill a Mockingbird is filled with integrity. For example, many of the people in Maycomb share a prejudiced sense of integrity when it comes to its racist views. However, it is Atticus Finch’s integrity throughout the novel that really embodies the idea of moral and ethical principles. He puts into action every moral idea that he supports. Atticus is a role model to not only his children, but to the whole town of Maycomb, and his integrity is a great part of what makes him such a good example. Integrity breeds integrity. Harper Lee is suggesting that integrity within ourselves helps others to have integrity.…

Tom Robinson, an African-American man, is put on trial for the rape of a nineteen year old girl. Since those in the court system look down upon colored people, his trial is not fair from the start. Both the judge and the members of the jury are white, southern males, and these people do not like African Americans because they believe that they do not deserve to be treated like people and have actual human rights.. For example Tom says to Atticus, “Yes, suh. I felt sorry for her…” (164). At this point Tom was basically digging his own…

Prejudice and intolerance towards people because they are of a different race has been notorious in America since the early 1900’s. In Harper Lee’s “ To Kill a Mockingbird”, in a town called Maycomb, intolerance is superabundant against black people and any affiliation with them. In the story Tom Robinson is being indicted of rape and Atticus Finch steps up to defend him. With this situation lingering in Maycomb,of course the town’s people express the intolerance they have towards an innocent black man and a white man helping him. In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch is portrayed as a respected, knowledgeable, and true person. I have a good deal of respect for Atticus Finch, mainly because of his outlook on parenting and basic respect for others. Atticus believes that you truly can't understand someone unless you step into their shoes. "You never really understand a person until you consider things from their point of view" (Lee 34). This quote shows that Atticus is a caring parent and wants his children to learn that every person is going through their own problems and you mostly don't know all of them. He wants them to know to be kind to others no matter how they act. Atticus wants his children to learn certain lessons through experiences rather than seeing or hearing things. “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do” (Lee 116). Atticus has good parenting morals because he understood that Jem had to go read to Mrs. Dubose to keep her mind off the painkiller. He wanted Jem to be brave and do it, even if he didn’t want to, because then he would truly understand what bravery was. All in all, Atticus is a great father figure and a fantastic parenting model.…

Racism in Maycomb was the norm. Any attempt to deviate from that way of thinking was shunned, and you as well as branded on your forehead `nigger-lover'. As Atticus told Scout, ."..nigger-lover is just one of those terms that don't mean anything - like snot-nose. It's hard to explain - ignorant, trashy people use it when they think somebody's favoring Negroes over and above themselves."(p.113) Very few people in Maycomb dared risk the scorn of the town, but those who did were completely admirable. Tom Robinson's trial brought out the true characters of all the townspeople. The Ewells were proved to be ignorant and crass, while others, such as Atticus and Tom Robinson, shone through with their honesty and integrity.…

There are many examples of classism in Saskatoon that relates to the situation in Maycomb. Though we may not want to admit it, classism is a problem with certain areas of our city. To compare one set of people to another by the amount of money they make or the objects they have is to compare social classes. Those with more money are considered higher on the social scale as opposed to those who make minimum wage and have to hold onto 3 jobs to provide for their families. The people of Maycomb are divided by their names. The Finches are on top, Cunninghams next, and the Ewells and Negros are almost on the same level, with the Negros slightly lower. This relates to Saskatoon with how the East side is the higher class side, the North end being middle class and the West side being the lowest class because of its age and those who live there. To Kill a Mockingbird shows how history repeats itself time and time again.…
