INTRODUCTION
This case, “Dilemma at Devil’s Den” is about Susan, a business student, and her experience as a student employee in the campus snacks bar called The Devils Den. It basically deals with ethics and individual behaviour of a person towards the organization. Susan observed that the employees of the Den were allowing their friend free food, themselves taking food home, stealing and not following the basic rules set out for the organization.
Susan is in dilemma of choosing between what is right for the organization or what is right for herself. She wanted the employees to work harder, to finish their jobs on time and be punished for stealing and breaking any other rule. Mean while, she thought of taking up this issue with the concerned authorities at CFS (College Food Service). But feared the negative consequences which might follow like losing her job, being out casted by the other employees which might affect her future prospects of becoming a student manager.
BACKGROUND
The managers at Devil’s Den seem unaware there is a problem with theft. In doing so, they take the unconcerned or nonissue approach in regards to unethical conduct. Susan is having a dilemma because she is a moral, ethical person who feels uncomfortable with the current “anything goes” work environment. While she did mention some of the problems with theft to one of her student managers, Mack, she feels that he took her complaints casually. Mack is taking the damage control approach to managing ethics by keeping the storage room locked more often without ever confronting any employees. Bill, on the other hand, would
