Also, why this certain vision of eternal beauty is the goal of desire. Correspondingly, how the experience of beauty affects the way one can live their lives. Lastly, talking about the relation between education and giving birth to understanding and wisdom and why is Eros a philosopher.
Understand the souls rise towards perfect beauty
The way Diotima understands the soul’s rising towards the direct experience of perfect beauty is by how she explains …show more content…
the “ladder of love” to Socrates. She explains to him that the proper way to achieve the highest level of perfect beauty is by to learn to love a single beautiful body, then secondly, realizing the difference between the first body and second body and how they are beautiful in different ways. Next, is how to differentiate the beauty of one soul compared to the beauty of the body. Thus, understand that the beauty of the soul is more important than the physical beauty of ones. Following, knowing the difference between beautiful souls and moral beauty. Fifthly, beauty of knowledge. Last of all, beauty itself, the mind also desires to study beauty, and the only way to do so is through knowledge and understanding. Once he learns how to love one individual from another only then he will experience beauty itself, rather than other physical beauty.
Thus, the perfect beauty is neither in someone’s face, nor eyes or mouth, it is not in flesh. It will be by knowledge and wisdom, seeking true virtue, something that is eternal; as knowledge gets passed down and last forever.
The ideal Beauty – the Beautiful itself Continuing above once the individual has learned to see beauty in everything and how they are all the same, he will become the lover of knowledge loving all sorts of ideas. He will then reach the goal of love that is beautiful in nature. This type of beauty will be eternal, never diminishing. Beauty will be in everything, not just in bodies or in knowledge, it will appear in itself, different from everything else.
The Form of Beauty This form of beauty is important because it shows that beauty is something we see physically or the sensory version of beauty, but it’s the intellectual beauty, something that we cannot touch by our hand, such as knowledge. There are two forms of beauty, one is by how we perceive such things as beautiful. Such as, we may believe someone is beautiful by appearance wise, or a painting is beautiful, again by the visible sight.
However, it is also an abstract way of perceiving something as beautiful, this type of beauty unchanging, it is eternal. Like, humans we may lose our physical appearance of beauty however, our knowledge, soul, and wisdom of beauty will last forever. Thus, saying so the form of is something we cannot see but it is eternal. It is knowledge and, wisdom.
Why is this Beauty the Goal of Desire?
This version of beauty is the goal of desire because we have desire to possess good things forever, we want to achieve happiness which is seeking immortality. Beauty is a desire to retain forever. As we preserve and pass on our knowledge and wisdom to others that can be eternal. As others will also hold on the knowledge. This type of beauty is the only thing mortals have to achieving immortality, since knowledge never dies. Thus, why this idea of beauty is the end goal of desire.
Experience of Ideal Beauty Affect the Way One Lives Life The way desire of beauty may affect the way someone lived their life is that if they don’t understand the true meaning of beauty, then they will end up searching for the wrong type of beauty. As stated in the last paragraph one must understand that beauty is not the physical form of beauty but the intellectual form of beauty. This is where we seek knowledge and wisdom. If the person searches for beauty in the psychical form they may end up disappointed as they may not achieve their desire.
However, if they search for beauty in the true form as in knowledge, they will be able achieve immortality, which is what we desire.
They will also gain happiness, which is the end itself.
The Relation between Education and Giving Birth to Wisdom
Individual who give birth to wisdom have reached the highest form on the ladder of love. These people are like poets, they give knowledge and virtue. If an individual has found happiness while in search of beauty they will be lucky enough to find others who are “pregnant” with wisdom. A child can receive education and learn what he knows about the world.
However, if that child talks to someone who is pregnant with wisdom the child will have gained that wisdom he has just acquired from the soul. Thus, this will last him a lifetime, and more so than the education he had received before. This will build the bond stronger between the two. The child is also receiving a certain type of education, he has gained knowledge, wisdom and doing so he will understand the type of beauty to search for; as will search for others with the same type of knowledge.
Why is Eros a
Philosopher? Eros is a philosopher because he is a lover of wisdom. Eros was born to his father, Poros who is wise and resourceful and Penia, his mother who is neither. Nevertheless, like Penia who was a midwife, Eros is there to act like one. He is only there to contribute the birth of idea to others. Diotima states that “he is in between mortal and immortal.” (Symposium, 47). Euros is neither good nor beautiful, because to be beautiful he would already possesses the beautiful things in life. However, he too desire the need for good and beautiful things. Eros is the object of desire, he has already found the beautiful soul and therefore has found wisdom and virtue.
The Conclusion Diotima’s understands the souls rising towards the direct experience of the perfect beauty by the ladder of love, once must reach the highest level to understand what true beauty is. It is not physical but more so intellectually and with wisdom. Diotimas also discusses on how to know ideal Beauty – the beautiful itself, beauty is in everything and nothing at all in the same aspects. You will be able to see beauty in different forms. Also, what is the form of beauty is as it is the soul of the beautiful, how the soul is wisdom and we gain knowledge. Thus, achieving happiness which is the end itself. This beauty is also the goal of desire because it brings us closer to the end goal of immortality and happiness. However, if one does not understand the difference between the two type of beauty, physical and knowledge, then this could lead to how they may live their life differently, compared to the one who understand the true perfect form of beauty. This also brings forth the relation between education and giving birth to wisdom. That if one converses with another who is “pregnant” with the ideas of wisdom and knowledge, then they will have gained sort of education and will seek other who are giving birth to knowledge. Lastly, Eros a philosopher because he is a lover of wisdom, there for he is assisting others with knowledge and ideas.
