1.1 – Define the following types of abuse: -

Physical Abuse
1.1a – Physical abuse can be defined as causing actual physical harm to an individual. 1.2a - The signs and symptoms associated with physical abuse can be e.g. hitting, shaking, biting, throwing, burning and suffocating. 1.3a - The factors that may contribute to an individual being more vulnerable to physical abuse can be due to their age, their physical ability, a physical disability, a sensory impairment, learning difficulties, mental health issues, or their culture or religion.

Sexual Abuse
1.1b – Sexual abuse can be defined as forcing an individual to take part in sexual activities or behave in sexually inappropriate ways. 1.2b - The signs and symptoms associated with sexual abuse can be e.g. loss of sleep, unexpected or unexplained change in behaviour, bruising, soreness around the genitals and torn, stained or bloody underwear. 1.3b - The factors that may contribute to an individual being more vulnerable to sexual abuse can be due to their age, a physical disability, sensory impairment, learning difficulties, mental health issues and level of education and intellectual understanding.

Emotional and Psychological Abuse
1.1c – Emotional and psychological abuse can be defined as a form of mistreatment in which there is intent to cause mental or emotional pain or injury. 1.2c – The signs and symptoms of emotional and psychological abuse can be depression, confusion, loss of sleep, unexplained change in behaviour and fear. 1.3c – The factors that may contribute to an individual being more vulnerable to emotional and psychological abuse can be due to their age, a disability, mental health issues, stressful life events including bereavement, divorce, illness or injury, cultural or religion and race.

Financial Abuse
1.1d - Financial abuse can be defined as theft of money or property, mismanagement of individual’s finances and denying an individual access
