Miles Nelson is one of the Veterans Service Officers working at Hays County Veterans Services. Miles is also a student at Texas State University. He is in his senior year studying for his Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology. While Miles has other degrees, he states that Anthropology is the one he would consider to be the most applicable in this situation. Miles is a veteran himself. While typing the closing documents, a secretary working on “Amendment No. 1 to the First Preferred Ship Mortgage” wrongly typed Prudential’s first mortgage as “$92,855.00” instead of “$92,885,000.00”. This was not noticed by any one. But when United States Lines defaulted on the notes secured by the amended mortgage, Prudential tried to foreclose its $92,885,000 first mortgage. USL’s bankruptcy trustee objected, arguing that the mortgage should be limited to $92,885 as typed in the amendment 1. GECC held USL notes secured by a second mortgage. GECC brought suit for a declaration that Prudential’s first mortgage was valid only for $92,855. Both in the Southern District of New York and on appeal to the Second Circuit, GECC lost.…
In support of exclusions from gross income relating to discharge of indebtedness, Stevens v. Commissioner 2008 is a primary example as the court case was held in the United States Tax Court. Gerard Stevens was held responsible for determining a $21,323 deficiency in his Federal Income Tax for 2003 and the argument was whether Stevens failed to include in income his discharge of indebtedness or if he was liable for the accuracy-related penalty under section 6662(a). In 2002, Stevens purchased real property in Illinois which is a recourse state and the property was purchased for investment purposes by Stevens and his wife as joint tenants. As they were unable to make mortgage payments…
When donating money to organizations many people are worried about if their money is even going to the organization or, if it’s going into someone else’s pocket. Organizations tell people that their money goes to helping people, animals, or anything that will manage to get your attention. Most of these charities make depressing commercials to grab the viewer's attention and make them feel sorry for what has happened to these people or animals. Well the real question is how do you actually know if your money is going to save this innocent dog or this suffering person?…
It is important to keep honoring our veterans because they have sacrificed so much for this country. Also we honor them because we need to tell them how appreciative we are of their dutiful service to our country. Even the president honors our veterans. Each year the president or one of his representatives lays a wreath on The Tomb of The Unknown Soldiers in the Arlington Cemetery every Veterans Day to honor those veterans. Even though the first unknown soldier was laid to rest there on Armistice day on the year of 1921 this ceremony still continues. This is one way that shows just how important honoring our veterans…
I agree with the premise of the essay that the four generations discussed have very different points of view about work and the preferred ways of management. In my country too, this all four generations have very different points of view about work and the preferred ways of management. The Veterans, Baby Boomers, and Generation xers these three generations' people have completely different points of view in lifestyle, their ways of view at work and home, conversation, and relationship than my generation's people in my country. For example, my grand mother and grand father always dressed properly, and done their work on time. Consequently, my cousins never dressed properly on their work, and do not done their work on time even if they have time…
It is true that veterans are the heroes of this country yet receive the least attention to their health. There should be a change in the government; before anyone is deployed out of the country to fight a war, he or she should be given a free house for them self or family. This is just from my observation. However, veterans always return home from deployment with some form of injury it could be physical, mental or emotional that is why nurse need to advocate for them. Health care is the next phase in a veteran’s life after they come back from war. It is important for the veterans to be treated as soon as possible for a better out com. As explained in Shiner (2012) Veterans needed to assess and treated immediately they return from a war…
Have you ever wondered why the military and our veterans are important? I mean really thought about it. Yes, they keep us safe, but it’s that and so much more. Without them our country wouldn’t exist and we wouldn’t have the rights that we have now. They fought in past wars, the present wars, and will fight in wars to come.…
The definition of a homeless veteran is combining being homeless and having the status of being a veteran. In 2009 President Obama and Secretary Shinseki made a commitment to end homelessness amongst veterans in 5 years. This was in collaboration with the Veterans Administration (VA). Homeless within the ranks of our veterans has been around for decades. There are many explanations why some veterans are homeless. It could be due to not receiving benefits after leaving military service, mental illness, drug and or alcohol abuse, no family or just not having a job. As you can see there are multiple reasons a veteran can become homeless. There has been study finding that homeless veterans who have experienced…
The Iraq war has ended as of December 2011. Osama Bin Laden has been killed as of May 2011 and yet the war in Afghanistan is still ongoing. The jihadist terrorism threat that our nation once feared from Al-Qaeda has diminished. Many question the justification of the United State’s involvement in the Middle East over the past decade. What have our intentions been this whole time and have the lives of those brave military men and women lost been worth the fight?…
According to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans (NCHV), nearly 200,000 American Veterans are homeless on any given night (Rieckhoff). NCHV - the resource and technical assistance center - reported that the number of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) - (OEF) veterans are becoming homeless much more quickly than Vietnam veterans. As the war in Iraq and Afghanistan continues the number of homeless veterans increases. The next generation of American Veterans is on its way home, and tens of thousands more will return from combat over the years to come. Upon returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan thousands of veterans are facing a new nightmare, the risk of homelessness.…
The U.S Department Veteran’s Affairs (VA) provides a wide range of benefits for our service members, veterans and their families. Some of these benefits include but are not limited to include compensation, disability, education, and home loans. Throughout this paper I will discuss these benefits and the eligibility required to receive them. Eligibility for most VA benefits is based on type of discharge received through the military which is normally all discharges under other than dishonorable conditions.…
