According to News 6, Jamel Dunn walked into a Florida pond following a fight with his girlfriend. He ended up near a group of teenagers smoking marijuana who told the man not to go into the water, but their warning didn't seem to be out of concern for his safety when the laughter began.
Cocoa, Florida police spokeswoman Yvonne Martinez said:
“He started to struggle and scream for help and they just laughed. They didn’t call the police. They just laughed the whole time. He was just screaming ... for someone to help him.”
They didn't just laugh at Dunn while he fought to …show more content…
stay above the water, they also hurled cruel words his way.
FOX News Reports the teens, between the ages of 14 and 16 years old, could be heard saying:
"Get out the water, you gonna die, ain’t nobody fixing to help you, you dumb (expletive)."
They kept there word. They didn't go help the 32-year-old man as he was drowning, instead they hit the record button on their phone, joking and laughing at him as he struggled to stay alive.
Eventually, the man went under the water, and he never came back up.
One teen was heard saying "Oh, he just died," and he was right.
Dunn drowned right before their eyes while they did nothing but make fun of him.
They didn't help, and they didn't tell, the teens just got up and left after Dunn disappeared underwater, not even bothering to report what happened.
The video the teens made showed up on social media and was reported to the authorities, but nothing can legally be done to punish them for standing by while the man died.
According to Florida Today, detectives identified and questioned them, but criminal charges are not likely to be filed against them because watching the drowning happen does not make them directly involved in his death, and there is not a Good Samaritan law that could be used against them for not helping him.
Martinez described the groups hardened response to Dunn's death after they were discovered:
“There was no remorse, only a smirk.”
The Brevard County State Attorney's Office said the video was a "tragedy," adding the teens had "no moral justification" for not attempting to help Dunn.
A GoFundMe page has been setup by a family member to help pay for Dunn's funeral expenses.
