Disaster Brought by Typhoons in the Philippines
Nowadays, what do you usually see in the television? In front of the headlines of newspaper? The one which everyone’s talking about, Showbiz? Lifestyles? Business? No, the most top news air last year was all about disaster brought by typhoons which leaves vast destructions not only in properties but also loss of thousands of lives. Our country, the Philippines has been blessed with natural resources where other countries don’t have. Time by time, Filipinos have learned to utilize these resources for human necessities and for economic development. Some of these resources are converted to farms, subdivision and other infrastructure, mainly our forest. If you will notice from the news, whenever a typhoon visits the Philippines. Floods were experienced were experience were experienced in the different parts of the country. Just like what happened n Mindanao last December. This place was struck by typhoon Sendong where it created devastating destruction in properties and lives. To unlock the mystery behind the cause of these flashfloods, the main reason is our forest. Why? It is because our forest here in the Philippines have been illegally logged, that’s why the tall trees that should be the one to absorb large quantity of water brought by the rainfall could no longer support the soil that result to flashfloods and landslides. As we all know, trees plays an important role in our environment. These problems regarding our forest resources should not be step aside and be ignore by our government and the society. Our government should have political will in setting a law against illegal logging. And in that law stated that whoever caught breaking those rules should be punished. Let these be an eye opener for each of us and be a reminder for everyone that starting from now, we should pay attention to our forest. Preserve and maintain our forest beauty. Join the campaigns to fight against illegal logging, cause were not the only one who could benefit from it, but

The Philippines are largely affected by geophysical hazards, mainly by tectonic hazards such as earthquakes and volcanoes, these hazards occur due to the Philippines geographical location, it is located between 2 destructive plate boundaries of the Eurasian plate and the Philippines plate which when submerging under one another create allot of friction which causes heat, this melts the submerging plate under the Philippine islands themselves which form volcanoes on the islands such as Mayon which prove to be quiet catastrophic when erupting. The friction created by the submergence of the plate can also be felt as an earthquake and as the plate boundaries are quiet close to the islands the earthquakes are generally more powerful like the Manila earthquake January 11, 1982 which was registered 6.9 on the Richter scale. As the Philippines are also surrounded by sea and oceans tsunamis is a large possibility, when an earthquake under sea occurs the water above it gets shaken causing waves which get larger as they close in to the shores. This is a large threat to the Philippines as it is formed of 7 thousand islands most of them relatively close to the sea level meaning that they can get submerged by waves not that high, a 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit the east cost of the Philippines on August 16th, 1976 12:11 A.M., this created a tsunami devastating 700km of coastline bordering Moro Gulf in the North Celebes Sea this tragedy left 5,000 dead, 2,200 missing, 9,500 injuries and a total of 93,500 people left homeless.…

California is an MEDC, the 6th largest economy in the world with a GDP of US$65000 per capita. However, despite the high risk of hazards it is a very desirable place to live because of its relaxed lifestyle and natural beauty. The population is growing mainly due to immigration which means that cities such Los Angeles are becoming more vulnerable. The Philippines is a Newly Industrialised Country (NIC) and has low to middle income of US$5000 per capita. Their economy is mostly dependant on agriculture (because of the rich, fertile soils on the volcanic hills), manufacturing and tourism, which are all at risk from the natural disasters. Although it is only a small group of islands, the population is huge at 91 million (over twice the size of California's). Both California and the Philippines lie on plate boundaries and therefore both suffer from tectonic hazards. As with all plate boundaries, friction often builds up between the plates also causing regular earthquakes which can sometimes result in tsunamis as well. In the Philippines earthquakes have multiple impacts. This is partly to do with the physical geography of the land. Being a group of islands means that the epicentres of the earthquakes are often in the sea, which increases the likelihood of tsunamis. It is also very mountainous inland which means many areas are vulnerable to landslides. One earthquake in 2006 triggered landslides, a flood and a local tsunami 3 feet high. Another relatively minor earthquake was one of the causes of a catastrophic mudslide, killing1150 people. The Philippines does not have the economic resources to deal with the…

Many people face dire situations everyday, but what about deadly? This is what about 43,000 Filipinos faced on October 15, 2013 when a deadly 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the islands of Bohol and Cebu. The temblor was the largest to shake the area in 23 years. (BK Info) Also, 2211 aftershocks hit the region and most citizens were completely unprepared, and shocked. The cause of this disaster is likely the East Bohol Fault. The quake killed around 185 people and put at least 36,000 buildings (mainly homes) into a state of destruction. Various locations were now just heaps of wreckage, including ports, schools, airports, hospitals, and lots of houses. People respond to a natural catastrophe by gathering supplies, getting help, and trying to survive and get back upon their feet.…

Deforestation is an issue we need to fix. I would like to spend 100,000 dollars on deforestation because some of the trees that are being cut down are thousands of years old. “Any fool can destroy trees”(John Muir, “The American Forests,” Atlantic Monthly, August, 1897) Above all this, one fact remains the same, we need trees to live. If we destroy all the trees in the world, we are left with harsh living conditions for ourselves. Our forests should be preserved if we want a better nation.…

Tropical revolving storms occur in every area of the world, affecting both the richest and poorest countries. The effects of such storms can be devastating to even the richest and most developed countries; however it is often the case that poorer countries are affected most adversely by tropical revolving storms in both humanitarian and economic terms. For example, whilst tropical storms in highly developed countries such as Hurricane Katrina is the USA caused substantial damage, the effect of Cyclone Nargis on the less economically developed Myanmar was arguably far greater.…

I am appealing to you as a conservationist. I believe that the natural resources of the forest can be of great help to us. As we experience this oil and gas crisis in the US, we are forced to import oil from foreign countries. Thus causing the cost of gas to skyrocket. If we are allowed to develop parts the forest for oil and gas, it will help to lower the cost of gas. “The oil and gas boom is also affecting the quality of life in small towns, causing spikes in the housing market.” (“Wyoming Outdoor Council” 2009-2013). These developments will help also to increase revenue for the US.…

As we know human need air to live without air we can not breathe, so it is important for us to keep our forests. environmental problems arise as a result of human activity itself, utilization of natural resources that exceed the threshold carrying capacity of land and without regard to the aspects of sustainability will be bad for the environment. Based on the data that I quoted from the internet, Indonesia has a total forest area of about 126.8 Million Hectares From Sabang to marauke, and 126.8 million hectares is expected to accommodate the lives of all Indonesian citizens, amounting to 46 million people. llegal Logging according to Law No. 41/1999 on Forestry was a violation of law committed by any person or group of persons or legal entities in the field of forestry and trade of forest products; cut or collect wood forest products (HHK) of forest land without permission, receiving or buy HHK allegedly illegally collected, as well as transport or have HHK without a Certificate of Legal Forest Products (SKSHH).…

For a long time, forests have offered a great assistance to our country in many aspects: social, economic, and ecological. People gain benefits from the forests, as forests also gain from them. Years have passed and the people became greedy. They come out to take whatever they could before someone else does; not taking into their minds whatever environmental problems may arise. The society is not aware of how the forests have been there to maintain the equilibrium in the environment for they only took into account the economic benefits they could get from it. It is known to all that most individuals have the tendency to learn the importance of an object only if they would experience a dilemma without that object. The people rarely appreciated the ecological benefits provided by the forests, so they continued to be unreasonable until they have been experiencing drastic environmental problems making them realize that the forest resources are not made to last forever.…
