Discipline and Management: Different Yet Related
Discipline: Proper conduct and or training in accordance with rules
Management: The act of handling directing or control
Behavior: The observable responses of acting or the manner of behaving
Misbehavior: The improper or inappropriate responses of acting
Classroom management is an integral part of the learning environment. It is imperative that teachers differentiate between strategies and understand the effectiveness of using them in the twenty first century classroom.
Discipline, which is associated with having the proper conduct or training in accordance with obeying/following rules can also be described as punishment for correction of the afore mentioned training. In which case would make discipline related to management, which is the act of handling, directing or controlling. The two are alike in that they both can be directed by the lead from the teacher.
In the classroom, the teacher sets the tone for proper conduct (discipline). She is responsible for the education and enforcement of the rules and consequences (management). If the teacher fails to properly monitor and enforce the school regulations and general classroom rules, then disciplinary problems may result from not taking a strong or firm enough stance as the education manager.
Behavior is the responses that you can observe in respect to acting or behavior. In the classroom, this is the way a student behaves during the course of instruction. This would also include the students’ social skills and his/her ability to respond to direction. Behavior is closely related to discipline because it is how the student acts in accordance to following rules or direction; which goes back to management and the teachers control over the classroom.
