Discourse Analysis By James Paul Gee
James Paul Gee, in his text “What is Discourse Analysis?” presents discourse as a series of sentences that, depending on their arrangement, convey different meanings. The grammar used to compose a sentence, in addition to the context the sentence is used in, affects its meaning. The author poses the following phrase, “Clean it up,” in order to illustrate that depending on what has been spilled, the action will be carried out differently. Additionally, Gee illustrates discourse analysis as means of enacting social identities, which are recognized based on what Gee refers to as: web associations.
