The central message of this documentary was to never discriminate. “Discrimination is the treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit” (Discrimination). Discrimination can come in a variety of ways, such as racial or sexual discrimination. The discrimination that was most talked about in this film was racial discrimination. In 1968 a…
The documentary remarks on the origins of race and how it has affected history and its people. There has been a history of intolerance in America against the “them”, the others. “Them”, being the different, the unknown. It is clear that people are afraid of the unknown because of the uncertainty it brings thus they immediately label anything different as “them”. The ultimate concept I was able to derive from the documentary was that race is an idea created by society to further certain people; whether it be on a political, social, or economical aspect. The Shadow of Hate accounts the troubling relic embedded in our country, which is the overwhelming prejudice that has occurred in America for centuries. Quakers, Native Americans, and the Japanese-Americans are a few groups that have been significantly affected by whites’ obsession and preoccupation to remain “superior” to the rest, the “them”. The documentary even brings forth current tensions that cause rifts between our cities and communities.…

Racial connections between African-Americans and Asian-Americans have experienced both instances of solidarity and mistrust throughout histories of their encounters. Solidarity movements between the two groups existed, in an effort to combat U.S. discriminatory policies in the 20th century, as well as instances of racial tensions, such as African-American boycotts of Korean businesses in an effort to stand against racial discrimination. In an effort to secure resources and power, African-Americans and Asian-Americans have drifted apart in a racial divide. Asian and African-Americans, in their demand for resources and power, often collided in their interests. In the prospects of moving up the racial hierarchy, African-Americans and Asian-Americans…
In the early 1920’s through the 1930’s, racial discrimination was something that was not hidden in the dark. Black people were hardly ever shown respect from white people. In The Great Debaters a black debate team rallies up to compete with white schools to prove that they could do what anyone else could do. Samantha, James, Henry, and Hamilton, which made up the debate team, consistently won competition after competition, leaving the white schools in awe due to the fact that their impression of black people were…
If one were to look at crimes that are based on sexual orientation, the number of crimes is astounding. A hate crime based on one’s sexual orientation is when an individual is bullied, threatened, harassed, or even killed due to his or her sexual likings. For instance, look at Matthew Shepard. He was a gay man who was beaten and tied to a fence post and left for dead, all because he was gay. He was found several days later, but unfortunately he had died as a result of his injuries. The same applies for crimes that are religion and disability based.…
In Auburn, Maine, a Lisbon man of Ethiopian decent who worked at a Walmart receiving center for four years is suing the company. He is seeking both compensatory and punitive damages along with attorneys’ fees and the cost of expert witnesses. The man, Abdulaziz Omar, states that the company discriminated against him due to his race and subsequently fired him to retaliate against his complaint about workplace discrimination and an injury he sustained while on the job. Omar started working for Walmart in 2006, but it appears the bulk of the trouble started in 2009. Omar states that he was treated less favorably by his supervisor than others who were not black. Omar claims that he was questioned about where he was from and that his response lead his supervisor to state he did not feel comfortable having Omar around his desk. Omar also claims that he was questioned about whether he spoke English which made him feel uncomfortable and targeted due to his race.…
Being American is about more than just your racial background or heritage. It is about how hard are you willing to work, to fight for your goals and dreams. Americans nowadays have become self-assured and lazy, unwilling to work hard while just assuming that their goals and dreams will come true. Immigrants on the other hand realize that they will not be given anything, and have to fight to establish a livelihood in America, but once they do they can easily become complacent as well. “Illegal immigrants” however can never become complacent, because they are not even citizens, and…
Illegal immigration is the immigration of someone from his or her home country to another country without becoming a legal citizen. Illegal immigrants have many different names; illegal aliens, undocumented workers, and unauthorized citizens are just a few names they are called. Whether undocumented workers should stay in the country or leave has been debated in the United States for a long time. In the year 2006, there was an estimated 11.5 to 12 million undocumented immigrants living in the U.S (“FAIR”). Illegal immigrants are willing to do any kind of work to feed their families and to pay for the things they need and want in life. Undocumented workers come from third world countries where health care is not as advanced there as it is in the United States. The United States was also founded by immigrants invading the American Indians’ land. Illegal immigrants should have the right to live in the Unites States and have equal rights as other citizens.…
No matter where you go in the world, there will always be someone who does not like the kind of person you are. Even though gay rights have already been passed in the United States they are not being enforced as much as they should be. The fact that gays are different from the average person should not…
First, illegal immigration is a huge controversy in our society and many people have different views on the topic. Some people think that it is good and some people think that it is bad which causes big outbreaks in society. Here is a reason why some people think that it is bad, the unauthorized immigrant population is all foreign-born non-citizens who aren’t legal U.S. citizens. Most unauthorized aliens entered without inspection or…
Immigration has been a hotly debated topic for many years. It is an intriguing subject especially in its extensive history of politics, stemming all the way to its current conflicts including the economic expenditures that are put onto the federal and state governments. A closer look into the issue of immigration will show that illegal immigrants contribute a lot to American society, a ready labor force, and many other benefits to the country. This all adds up to the fact that immigration is a necessary and good thing for the survival of this nation. The United States has always been considered the immigrant's nation and is called "The melting pot" for a reason.…
