Diversity
Diversity is all about recognising and valuing individual differences and raising awareness about them. Diversity is the inclusion of people from all backgrounds to encourage everyone, respect differences and ultimately to achieve better results by using the talents of all. It means to recognise and appreciate the variety of characteristics that make individuals unique, you have to promote and celebrate individual and collective achievements.
Equality
Equality is about making sure everyone is treated fairly and given the same life opportunities. It is not about treating everyone the same as they might have different needs to achieve the same outcomes. Equality means treating people in a way appropriate for their needs. It is ensuring individuals or groups of individuals are treated fairly and no less favourably because of race, gender, disability, religion or belief, sexual orientation or age.
Social class
When you discriminate against someone because of their social class this means that you are judging them because they have a better or worse class than you, such a person who has a high, middle or low social class and you might stereotype them because you think that everyone who has that certain class will act in a certain way. Social class discrimination is the act of those who treat others differently depending on their social situation, such as someone on benefits being treated unfairly compared to that of someone who works for a living. An example of social class discrimination is if a child from a low income family gets a scholarship at a private school and the other children discriminate against the child because they come from a different background, then this will be discriminating and this can lead to the child feeling bullied by the other children and that child might feel that they have no one to talk to and that when they talk to people no one actually listens to them and this can lead to them feeling isolated and humiliated.
Sexuality
When you discriminate against someone because of their sexual orientation this means that you are judging them because they have a different sexual orientation to you, such as a person who is a lesbian, gay, bisexual or homosexual and you might stereotype them because you think that everyone that has that a certain sexual orientation will act in a certain way. Sexuality discrimination is the act of those who treat others differently depending on their sexual orientation, such as someone who is bisexual being treated unfairly compared to someone who is homosexual. An example of sexuality discrimination is if a person who is homosexual who has less experience and worse results gets offered a job over someone who is bisexual, who has more experience and better results, just because of their sexual orientation, then this is discriminating and can lead to the person that hasn’t got hired to feel less important and that person might feel like what they are isn’t right and isn’t natural, and this can lead to them feeling humiliated and depressed.
Gender
When you discriminate against someone because of their gender this means that you are judging them because they have a different gender to you, such as a person who is a man or a woman and you might stereotype them because you think that everyone that has that certain gender will act in certain way. Gender discrimination is the act of those who treat others differently depending on their gender, such as someone who is female being treated unfairly compared to someone who is male. An example of gender discrimination is if a person who is a male is being judged because he does a job that is stereotypically done by a woman such as a nurse, hairdresser or nanny, then this is discriminating and can lead to that person who is being judged harshly or unfairly feeling that they are unwelcomed in the work place and this can lead to an hostile environment.
Religion
When you discriminate against someone because of their religion this means that you are judging them because they have a different religion to you, or because you do not have a religion, such as a person who is Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish or any of the other religions and you might stereotype them because you think that everyone that has that certain religion will act in certain way or because you don’t like their religion. Religious discrimination is the act of those who treat others differently depending on their religion, such as someone who is Jewish being treated unfairly compared to someone who is Christian. An example of this is someone not letting a Muslim person prey in their break because you don’t believe that their religion is right, this is discrimination because you’re not letting them express their religion even though they are doing it in their break time.
Age
When you discriminate against someone because of their age this means that you are judging them because they have a different age to you, such as a person who is younger or older than you and you might stereotype them because you think that everyone that has that certain age will act in certain way. Age discrimination is the act of those who treat others differently depending on their age, such as someone who is older being treated unfairly compared to someone who is younger. An example of this is if three people of different ages go for a job interview and one of them has just graduated, one has been working for a few years and the other has been working for most of their life, and the one that get employed is the one who has been working for a few year because the other two are either too young or too old. This is discrimination because older workers might have more experience and know how to solve problems quickly and younger workers might have new ideas that would help your business.
Culture
When you discriminate against someone because of their culture this means that you are judging them because they have a different culture to you, such as a person who is African, Indian, English, American or any other culture and you might stereotype them because you think that everyone that has that certain culture will act in certain way. Culture discrimination is the act of those who treat others differently depending on their culture, which is where you live, such as someone who is English being treated unfairly compared to someone who is American. An example of cultural discrimination is if a person from Africa isn’t accepted in a job because of the way that they dress this is wrong because no one should not be considered for a job just because they have a different cultural background, cultural discrimination is where other people don’t like your lifestyle and won’t give you equal rights in their lives, this is one of the most common types of discrimination, but also one of the ones that loads of people are affected by.
Ethnicity
When you discriminate against someone because of their gender this means that you are judging them because they have a different gender to you, such as a person who is Indian, Pakistani, African, Turkish or any other ethnicity and you might stereotype them because you think that everyone that has that certain gender will act in certain way. Ethnicity discrimination is the act of those who treat others differently depending on their race, such as someone who is African being treated unfairly compared to someone who is white. An example of this is if a person is refused from a job because they are coloured, even if they are the best person for the job, and someone else is hired who is white, this would be discrimination because that person is being refused because of their race, ethnicity discrimination is where other people judge you because of your race and won’t give you equal rights in their lives, the most common types of discrimination, but also one of the ones that loads of people are affected by.

    The interpretation that was given from the following research shows several different ways that discrimination plays a part between socioeconomic classes. The discrimination comes from, not only the government, but also the society. There are also examples of this in other countries. The more the society speaks on the topic, the more the discrimination will disappear. Most of the discrimination occurs towards the lower class members. Some things are not as clear as others.     The European Women’s Lobby (EWL) has been actively involved in the recent discussions concerning the European Commission’s 2008 proposed Anti-discrimination Directive which seeks to extend anti-discrimination legislation beyond employment on the grounds of religion or belief, disability, age and sexual orientation. Although sex-based discrimination is not included in the proposed Directive, the EWL welcomes it as an important step towards protecting women from discrimination on other grounds. The proposed Directive responds to and raises many issues, such as the shape of gender equality and anti-discrimination legislation in the EU, the concept of multiple discrimination and the role of equality bodies in protecting individuals’ rights. Within this context, the direction and content of this publication is informed by the EWL seminar, ‘Levelling up Gender Equality Legislation and Tackling Multiple Discrimination’ held in January 2009. This seminar allowed EWL members to discuss developments at the national level, both in relation to legislation and the mandate and effectiveness of (gender) equality bodies. The relationship between sex and other grounds of discrimination was explored as well as the current debates on multiple discrimination, intersectionality and women’s diversity. Given the participants’ high levels of expertise and experience in gender equality issues, the seminar provided a constructive forum for the exchange of knowledge and for developing EWL strategy. More specifically, this publication addresses key priorities of the EWL work on anti-discrimination. These are: • To ensure a uniform and strong legal framework for all grounds of discrimination at the European level. • To ensure that victims of multiple discrimination, who very often are women, are effectively protected by European and national legislation. • To include a gender perspective in anti-discrimination policies. • To have strong institutional mechanisms for the advancement of women…
