Discrimination in the media
In society today there are many stereotypes and discrimination, even in the year 2013. Most often the discrimination can be seen in the media. The media often portrays negative stereotyping towards different groups f people. Social networking, comedy television, and commercials are contributing factors to these stereotypes.

Social networking sites often provoke prejudice attitudes and stereotypes. On Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram you can find pages or videos dedicated to hate on a group of people. There are many negative stereotypes that also can be found on these websites. People use these websites everyday, most often they are exposed with these hate pages. I came across pages on Facebook such as “We hate India and their rubbish culture” and “We are Muslims and we hate America”. These types of pages have very hostile comments from people who agree with the page and people who disagree with the page. On Twitter and Instagram a user can use hash tags. Sometimes these hash tags can contain stereotypes. There was a picture of a white girl squeezing her eyes together. It had the caption of “#chinesegirlproblems”. The hash tag is promoting a stereotype that Chinese people look like they are squeezing their eyes together. Ignorant people most often cause these stereotypical comments and discrimination. Social networking websites can be seen as something positive, but on some occasions they promote discrimination.
A contributing factor for negative stereotypes is television shows. A viewer would most likely see stereotypes on comedy TV shows such as Tosh.0, South Park, Family Guy or The Cleveland show. You would often connect animated shows to a children’s show, but not in the case of Family Guy, The Cleveland Show, and South Park. These shows contain very profane material that a child should not see if they are flipping through TV stations. An episode of South Park discriminated against people with red hair. The character Eric Cartman delivered a “hate speech” directed at gingers, claiming that they are disgusting non-humans that do not have souls.” Later on in the episode Eric gets “Gingervitis”, which causes someone to become a ginger. If a child were trying to watch TV and saw this episode they would get a horrible message. Even though the show is supposed to be funny, it will still hurt many people emotionally. The shows Family Guy, The Cleveland Show and Tosh.0 most often make fun of different races. In an episode of Family Guy there was a joke, “Why are there so few black baseball players” “because they’re always stealing bases.” This is stereotypical against black people because the joke is saying all black people steal. These shows should be more careful to what goes on television. Comedy television shows frequently show stereotypes of different groups of people.

The average day American is often exposed to prejudice from commercials. Commercials such as Go Daddy, Planet Fitness, Old El Paso, and Coca Cola can be seen as stereotypical or derogatory. During the Super Bowl the commercials for Go Daddy and Coca Cola aired. The Go Daddy commercial had the stereotypical pretty girl make out with the stereotypical “geek”. The commercial was quite awkward. The Coca-Cola commercial angered many Arabic Americans. The commercial opens on a desert, immediately revealing an Arab man leading a camel through the desert. The Arab-American Anti-Discrimination Committee spoke out against what they considered to be a stereotypical depiction of an Arab man. In the Planet Fitness commercial there is a very fit man that says, “ I lift things up and put them down” through out the whole commercial. This creates the stereotypes that muscle men are stupid. The Old el Paso commercial depicts Mexican people by eating tacos and wearing sombreros. Even though some of these stereotypes maybe unintended, they still can anger many people. Commercials often show discrimination and stereotyping.

Today, there are many stereotypes that can be seen in the media. Stereotyping and discrimination can be seen everyday on social networking sites, comedy television shows, and commercials. It is most often that these stereotypes are negative rather than positive.

Harro asserts that the process through which we are exposed to these messages is akin to “brainwashing.” Cultural messages and stereotypes are transmitted through social media, magazines, commercials, music, radio, holidays, websites, TV shows, and the news. The truth is that we are constantly inundated with social messages that promote the status quo and the use of stereotypes. Omi and Winant describe how these cultural influences shape how people are placed into racial categories through the process of racialization. They describe that representations of race on U.S. television are like caricatures of racial groups, relying on oversimplification and familiarity, in order to maintain stereotypes and the status quo.…

Most stereotypes seem to have a negative tone towards the group of people they are intended for. Those types of stereotypes can be hurtful because they are opinions that are not the truth. Stereotypes can also affect the way people think about themselves and how they interact with others, for example Muslims are stereotyped as terrorist therefore people avoid Muslims all together.(Schaefer,2012).…

For an example of media portrayal of negative minority stereotypes, we can look at the 1992 riot in Los Angeles. In this case the media encouraged the perception that the black community was solely responsible for the riots and disturbances, even though the police reports show that of those arrested only 36% were black. This is just one example. Many television shows and video games show an overwhelming amount of African Americans and Hispanics as criminals. This is one way that race has become a social construction that is ingrained within our…

In present day media, there are numerous stereotypes of people that can be found, such as the popular jock or the dumb cheerleader. These stereotypes are displayed on television shows and others forms of media to add humour and make the shows more relatable to the viewer since many schools have such stereotypes. Many forms of media use social stereotypes as a way to provide the audience with a quick common understanding of the characters, so they base the stereotypes on their audience. Other forms of media use stereotypes to take the audience on a journey of social differences. Nevertheless, there are always a few stereotypes that are usually present in many forms of media, such as the “popular one”, the “dumb one”, the “smart one”, and so on.…

The word stereotype is defined as a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. When many hear the word ‘stereotype,’ specific images may come to mind such as white girls always drink Starbucks coffee. Today, most people laugh and undermine the power of stereotypes but the truth is stereotypes are overwhelmingly powerful and are used to belittle people, groups, and especially races. The presence of stereotypes is everywhere, on billboards, magazines, social media, and even in the news. Many do not realize the power that one image holds. Everyday there are images printed and shared that deteriorate individuals and races. The Latino population, for example, is frequently stereotyped and belittled for being uneducated. Latina women are hyper-sexualized and are seen only for the ‘sultry’ beauty Latina women can possess. The Latino population struggles to overcome their stereotypes because social media presents and perpetuates stereotypes that negatively affect the public perception of the Latino population.…

    Stereotyping In The Media

Stereotyping, in its various forms, plays a significant role in class divisions of our society but perhaps none more impactful than with the categorization of race as it relates to law enforcement. While statistics may seem to guide citizens to believe minorities commit more violent crimes, Mann suggests, “what types of crimes are defined, how they are defined, and who is defining them” are primary flaws in the overrepresentation of crimes committed by African-Americans (1993, p. 70). Perhaps the strongest influence contributing to the public perception of crimes committed by minorities is the racial stereotypes depicted by the media. I offer the movie trailer for “Whose Streets” advertising the aftermath of the Michael Brown police involved shooting in Ferguson, MO, from my white privileged seat, is a reminder of how the…

The media however, can sometimes implement a negative inclination to a particular group. What does this mean? The media and society can sometimes project negative influences( characteristic, trait, or stereotype) that nudges individuals to internalize such abstract influences to later develop and believe in them as reflection of their culture. The daily humorous stereotype publicized on T.V is an instruction for the underdeveloped minority youth on how to interact with society. The media sets a pattern for youth to later exhibit through their perspective and personal style that later leads to a pattern. In short, It’s an internalized point of view. That is reinforced by society's calamities such as poverty, child neglect, unsafe environments, unsafe influences, violence, drugs, prejudice, stereotypic media, and lack of visible role models. Children become what the media tells them to become, their just embracing the instruction that is most…

Television is also being accused of creating an unethical gap in the way that minorities are portrayed compared to the majority. While the larger networks are beginning to diversify their shows, the numbers still do not add up. Hispanic and Native American characters composed less than one percent of all characters on television (******). African-American characters added up to about 11 percent which is close to the actual population makeup.…

Society can be broken up into many groups by gender, race, or even traits. The world is made up of males and females, whites and blacks, and liberals and conservatives, all with a particular way of life. People are stereotyping others all the time without even noticing it, because of race or color. This trend in human thought is called stereotyping. A stereotype can be anything from women being considered better drivers or labeling French people as rude, but one thing that is in every stereotype is the designation of a group as a whole. Stereotypes are judgments based upon a person’s appearance or action; it can also be an over exaggerated view on a person. A stereotype can be also interpreted as a shortcut…

According to the Oxford dictionary, a stereotype is “a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing.” Racial biases and stereotypes are prevalent in the United States. The wrong interpretation of race has caused racism and prejudice problems, which have been passed from generation to generation. In America, where there is a large diversity, more people are guilty of “categorizing” others by using race and stereotypes. The incorrect “sorting” of individuals has become more evident on T.V, daily life, and current political and public views. In this text, I will explore some of the ways in which popular culture contributes to the dangerous trend of perpetuating and promoting unjust classifications through the use of stereotypes.…
