Stereotypes can destroy everyone especially the ones who are stereotyped. In the book “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck, two guys named George and Lennie they are friends and they work together. They find a job on a ranch and there is a lot of stereotypes on the ranch that the work on. In the book Steinbeck uses Crooks and Curley’s wife to show the evilness and hurtfulness in stereotypes and how they can hurt person who makes the stereotype and also the victim.…
“Stereotyping shapes us to see the people of the world as they first appear, yet no one looks under the skin and sees the beautiful qualities underneath.” In the book, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the characters stereotype each other just at a glance. Such as the start of a wife, the hot headed Hawking, and the slick Sergeant Slim. For instance, Stereotyping shapes the people in Of Mice and Men, not as they truly are underneath; however, in the story the characters are stereotyped by actions, attitude, and adult…
One of the obvious examples is when Blacky’s mum was not wanted as a coach at the Port football club. Neither Arks (the coach) nor the players wanted the help or support of a female. They might have thought it would be an embarrassment or simply it is and always will be a male’s sport. This is shown in the following quote “I’d thought of suggesting it to Arks that mum could be appointed tactical advisor. Send somebody over at the end of each quarter to get her thoughts. Or maybe they could use walkie talkies. But I knew Arks wouldn’t have a bar of it. Everybody thought that to be a great coach you had to have been a great player. And a bloke, of course.” pages 31 and 32. Blacky’s mum didn’t have the confidence to stand up for herself or her gender. I think that gender prejudice is not the biggest form of prejudice explored in this specific text, never the less, it is explored and gives an insight into how gender prejudice affects our community…
From the early 1900’s, society has strictly judged people by the way they look or where they come from. We still see this act of judgement re-occur in this day and age, unfortunately. In the novella Of Mice and Men, we clearly see the cruel conditions and situations that occurred during the Great Depression. This fantastic novel showcases the lives of two migrant workers, George and Lennie, who struggle to find a job and the stereotypical judgements of Lennie who is mentally disabled. In their journey, this novella introduces many other archetypes for the minorities of that time period, including women, colored people, and the elderly. John Steinbeck shows his expertise of crucial literary devices like allusion, archetype, and foreshadowing to show how humans will treat specific categories of people that have disabilities that in the end affect their hopes and dreams in life.…
In current times and in the past people have divided for many different reasons. This prejudice can be the result of many things, some of which include race and gender. In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, set on a Californian ranch during the great depression, two individuals are targeted by prejudice. One of them, a worker by the named Crooks, is experiencing discrimination because he is an African American on a ranch filled with whites. The other, Curley’s wife, is disregarded and avoided by ranch hands because they perceive her as jail bait because of her overprotective…
Honore De Balzac once said “Nature makes only dumb animals. We owe the fools to society.” In John Steinbeck’s novella Of Mice and Men, George and Lennie are two migrant farmers who dream of owning a ranch of their own, this is until Lennie, having a child's mind, but being a big strong guy, accidentally kills Curley’s wife, also killing their dream of owning a ranch. Lennie and George are portrayed as rabbits in Of Mice and Men because they follow along with the lower class blindly just like society desires them to, dreaming to change their path but never succeeding in this, like so many others.…
In Mice and Men there is harsh treatment of african americans during this time period. In fact Crook, one of the characters in the book is considered weaker than the others because of his skin color and he is crippled. He had to live out in the barn with the animals and he had his work shop off on one of the sides opposite of where his room was. He is seen more weaker than the other due to his skin color and he also gets treated that way too in the book he says, “ They play cards in there, but I can't because I am black.” (Steinbeck 68). This helps describe how he can be seen more weaker than the others because he can't be with them because he is blacked and he is crippled.Since they see him weaker they treat him differently. He has a different job on the ranch than the other workers. He is the only stable hand and is the person to take care of the horses on the…
John Steinbeck shows that discrimination can lead to aggression in the novel, Of Mice and Men, through the character Lennie. Lennie tries to explain to George that he doesn’t try to kill the mice, but he ends up killing them anyway; “I’d pet ‘em and pretty soon they bit my fingers and I pinched their heads a little and then they was dead-because they was so little” (Steinbeck 10). Lennie wants the comfort of having something to take care of even if it is just a mouse. George doesn’t understand why Lennie wants to pet the mouse and discriminates him for it, making Lennie act aggressively. Lennie says they died “because they was so little” and that he didn’t mean to act aggressively, but since he was discriminated, he killed the mouse. When Lennie…
In Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck one of the main themes is stereotyping. A stereotype is when people are grouped as being the same. There has always been stereotyping, and while some people break stereotypes or do not believe in them, there is still a number of people who do. Being stereotyped can make people want to act like what they are stereotyped as. Being stereotyped can slowly change how you act and who you are. Trying to break stereotypes, Lennie and George, Slim, Crooks, and Curley’s wife go against the norm for people like them in Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.…
“Prejudice is a great time saver. You can form opinions without having to get the facts,” stated author E.B. White. If someone is prejudice towards another, they view them as if they are a dirty animal, they belittle them and do not believe they are on equal grounds. The story “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck and Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s television series, “South Park” share similar messages about prejudice.…
In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee focuses more on the aspect of racial discrimination rather than “poor white trash” discrimination (Hovet 187). It is so conspicuous that a man loses his life because of it. While the discrimination is more prominent regarding race, the Finch family is also greatly discriminated against throughout the novel. Racism is very prominent in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, as evidenced when Tom Robinson, a black man, is accused of raping a white woman in the 1930s South; because of his innocence and untimely death, all lives in the novel will be changed forever, including Atticus Finch.…
Cases of injustice have always been present in human society. Whether it be discrimination against certain types of people, or just personal matters involving family and friends, you will always find a type of injustice being conducted somewhere in the world. There are many cases of injustice present in the novel "Of Mice and Men". Most of which were just on a casual scale, because at their time they were thought to be the right way to treat people.…
The novel Of Mice and Men takes place around the early 1930s, in the midst of the Great Depression. Though factors like the people’s constant yearn for money hints the setting, the terrible segregation that takes place against minorities is the distinct element defining this time period. However, if the first two chapters were told in the twenty-first century, the notions of mental and racial discrimination would be altered dramatically.…

According to the Cambridge dictionary, gender discrimination is a situation in which someone is treated less well because of their sex, usually when a woman is treated less well than a man. Men are always, until today, seen as the figure of leadership and success in many countries with no exceptions to some well-known countries where women are given as much rights as their counterpart (Dailymail, July 18, 2011). This problem is clearly expressed in countries such as India, Pakistan and China, however, not only them, the entire world deals with this. So, this is one of the biggest global issues.…
