The case we received was Ed Franklin, a former teacher at public and private schools in Minersville, pled guilty to state criminal charges of sexually molesting several of his former students. One of Franklin's victims was invited to appear at Franklin’s sentencing hearing in order to testify about the impact of the molestation. While the hearing was open to the press and public, the judge ordered the reporters present not to identify any of the sexual assault victims in press accounts of the sentencing. None of the reporters present at the hearing raised any objection to the judge’s order. Despite the order, a reporter for the American Press news syndicate included the victim’s name in coverage of the hearing.…
In the article by Michael Parenti, he explains that there is a widely accepted belief in this country that the media suffer from a liberal bias. He states that television pundits, radio talk-show hosts, and political leaders--including presidents of both parties--help propagate this belief, and their views are widely disseminated in the media. On the other hand, dissident critics--those who maintain that the corporate-owned press exercises a conservative grip on news and commentary--are afforded almost no exposure in this same supposedly liberal media. This is a valid source of information because author Michael Parenti is an author of Inventing Reality: The Politics of News Media. He also had a book, Political Mythology in America, which was…
Known for her tremendous work of hosting NPR’s On the Media, Brooke Gladstone analyzes in, “The Great Refusal”, the impact of reporters’ convictions in order to ascertain its direct effect on media bias. The job of a reporter is to recall relevant social and economic accounts that take place daily without siding on an issue. Majority of the time, journalists and reporters lack credibility to prove the accuracy or falsity of the information that they release to the public. While some seldom favors an issue relative to their opinion, others remain neutral and make the great refusal. Gladstone indirectly refers to the “Great Refusal” by providing brief historic scenarios that elucidate the controversy of media bias against society.…
FACTS: The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has a fairness doctrine requiring all radio and television broadcasters to present public issues over the airwaves in a civil and balanced way. The fairness doctrine is composed of two main requirements related to personal attacks in the context of public issue debates and political editorializing. The political editorializing rule requires that when a broadcaster endorses or opposes a political candidate, they must notify the opposed candidate and give them reasonable opportunity…
In “The Hostile Media Phenomenon” by Vallone, Ross, and Lepper there is a section dedicated to the perception of bias. They wrote about a study conducted about Pro-Israelis and Pro-Arabs and whether or not they perceived news segments as biased, and sure enough each side was blaming the other side for being biased against them (Vallone, 1985). Now I as an individual take the side of my Grandmother, one that acknowledges that there are biases among many media sources and that we all must be aware of it. But I don’t think it is a wise choice to ignore those with dissenting opinions. This brings me to another point made by Marie, she is a very compassionate person and is very sensitive to negative speech and rhetoric. She made her stance on media bias in my interview by saying “Yes, I think our media - MSNBC in liberal direction and FOX in conservative - are bias”. She also stated that there are very polarizing reporters in both sides of the media’s political spectrum such as Rachel Maddow being liberal and Glen Beck being…
--Media Bias—Conservative, liberal, other? The extent to which news outlets report the news biased in favor of a target audience based on demographics; different media outlets have different political views, consciously report based on those views.…
For example, in Fox news, they reported an article from Trump’s side, he was portrayed as the victim, when in reality it was not certain why polls had been kept open longer. CBS reported both sides of this certain topic, but CBS is not excluded when bias is mentioned. CBS reports articles about Eric Trump’s “illegal ballot selfie”, and how Trump’s children were not able to vote in the primary either, due to the fact that they forgot to register. An article which was not reported on Fox. Although Fox reported about the fact that a man who was dying in Florida could not vote for Trump, because his signature did not match the one on the voting registration. It went on to state that this has been the cause of many votes not being counted, but this was not reported on CBS. Fox News reported around three articles in which people were not able to vote for Trump, none of which were mentioned on CBS. While CBS had multiple articles about Russia getting involved in the United States election. Fox not only did not mention anything about Russia, but tended to stay clear of any news about Putin. Fox news tends to report their articles from Trump’s point of view, while CBS tries to maintain an equal balance of views but tends to shift the blame to Trump. Fox goes on to describe Trump as a successful businessman and states that Hillary Clinton’s email investigation was “long overdue”. Both news sources displayed some kind…
The media can make or break a speaker. If a speaker or politician is surrounded by followers, the media will show him or her to be a popular, civic person. If the speaker is controversial, regardless of the truth, he or she will be blasted by the media in one way or another. The media is where the general population gets the majority of its information, so it goes without saying that the media has large influence.…
Every presidential election year tensions and tempers flare between opposing party supporters. This year’s election season was no different, perhaps even more volatile than years past. The popular phrase “lesser of two evils” was heard countless times throughout the election, denoting the nominees Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump to be the only available options, regardless of how ill received they were. The media played a monumental role in this election, basically framing out the nominees personalities which heavily influenced how voters perceieved them. The bias in the media was grossly transparent throughout the entire election, uplifting Clinton while dragging Trump’s name through the mud. The media’s perpetuation of false narratives…
Media has the power to sway the opinion of the people according to what the politicians desire.…
Whether it’s the Internet, the worldwide news and celebrity news, bias is everywhere. The media gives out information to make everyone think the same thing and tell the public what they want them to hear. The media allows us to know what they believe is right about topics and situations. They have more information then what they actually give out. They give out what they want us to believe, focusing more on one topic that they favorite and giving us their opinion while other news sources might have a different one. People tend to believe what's on the news simply because it is on the news and they rely on them to tell the public what going on around them and expect it to be the truth, when in reality that might just be part of the story of that specific news source and their opinion, while other sources have a different one. Checking other sources before taking anyone's word to see if they all have the same side of the story is the best way to avoid media bias. Reasons why the media might not be telling people the real side of the story and telling the public what they believe is because they don't want to make anyone associated with them look bad. People can't make the right decisions if they don't know what's really going on. Journalism has to report what was said in an interview without adding or filtering their own opinion, but in news reporting it can be completely opposite and is rare to find a source…
“A Billion Cases of Rape Occur Each Day!” Imagine a news headline with that as the title. The initial absurdity of this claim would soon enough result in a deafening outcry by the public with fear and fury running rampant. Currently, the media has such a powerful influence on the public that with a single line of text the nation could be sent into anarchy. With no means to slow the speed at which the media can spread information, fraudulent news can quickly influence the public. A similar scenario is possible if the media neglects to pursue objectivity and denounce bias. Therefore, the media is in fact a problem in modern society and should be expected to strive to be as objective as possible in order to halt its influence on bad policy making,…
Political parties, interest groups and the media play huge role in damaging the political system especially the elections. Political parties are very biased on their party which that should be, but sometimes the parties find false information about the other party to use to their advantage with the public. The media does the same thing, different media sites and stations thing]k very differently. For instance, one news station might be biased towards republicans, and the other biased towards democrats. Normally you can tell by the tone of how media talks about certain political arguments.…
In America, there is media bias because ratings tend to increase when the attention span is more focused on the issues at hand. For instance, people would much rather documentaries or visuals involving chaos and violence rather than a humanly interview. Therefore, media becomes biased because the chosen headliners and stories are consumed with drama which draws larger audiences. On the other hand, political views as portrayed in the news are more likely to be liberal than conservative. Although there is little evidence to support this claim, the political views in different forms of media are usually liberal dependent on social issues such as feminism, gay rights, and welfare. Depending on the carrier of media, a company such as Fox News or CBS might edit the actual news in order to fit their persona or political views behind the company.…
