INDIVIDUAL FACTORS
Individual factors, such as a person’s age, gender, knowledge and attitudes can be highly influential in the decisions young people make on the road. Most drivers who have received their L and P plates are still in school, meaning their education has a large impact on their ideas behind safe practices. Individual’s with a higher level of education, are more likely to have participated in school programs aimed towards decreasing fatalities of young people on the road. Programs such as PARTY (prevent alcohol and risk-related trauma in youth), gives students a firsthand look at victims of road trauma and subsequently deters them from taking part in risks that may put them in the same situation. For example, young people employed as couriers, have a higher chance of being involved in a fatal accident as they tend to be on the road more, in all conditions. When the inexperience of young drivers is combined with a larger amount of time spent on the roads, the morbidity and mortality rates increase. However, even young drivers who work in retail are likely to be involved in fatal accidents. This is due to their income. Most people buy their first car between the ages of 19 and 22, an age where many are still full-time students. This means that their income is likely to be low and therefore their ability to buy a safe car is also decreased. With so many young people being employed in fast-food restaurants or in retail, their income is lower and therefore they are less likely to buy a car equipped with multiple safety features and/or purchase car insurance in the event of a crash.
