Discussion Case: Timberland’s Model of Corporate Social Responsibility

1. I would characterize Timberland’s exercise of its corporate power in society as a positive influence. They really draw their employees in and encourage them to give back to the community by serving in many area activities. Timberland is engaging in multiple stakeholders in its business operations, because their company is benefiting the employees and their families, and also the society by the time they spend giving back to the community. 2. Timberland has balanced its economic and social responsibilities through its various programs, such as the Path to Service program and sustainability goals, because they incorporate their social responsibilities very well through their economics and getting their employees involved. The company’s programs are examples of enlightened self-interest, because they recognize the long-term rewards to the company from its global involvement through an enhanced reputation, customer loyalty, employee satisfaction, and global community support. 3. The current economic recession may impact Timberland’s social programs, because they may not be able to give as much, to Path to Service and the other services they are a part of, financial as they have in the past, but this doesn’t mean that it will affect the amount of time the company can put into philanthropic activities. 4. I am very impressed by Timberland’s corporate social responsibility program and honestly do not see any immediately improvements. If they can keep up with what they are currently involved in, I think the company will continue to positively impact

On the VF’s website under Corporate Responsibility, they talk about their values: “To us, values such as honesty, integrity, consideration, and respect are more than words; they are embedded in everything we do and are the foundation of our social and environmental efforts.” With that said, it is quite obvious that they adopted Timberland’s CSR reporting. They also give back to the community as they have a VF 100 program for companies who have the highest number of community service hours. VF donates $1,000 for “$1,000 to each winner's qualified charity of choice.” I believe that VF recognized the importance and future of sustainability when they purchased Timberland and adopted their CSR reporting. As they have 50% of the market share, we can state that it was worth it for them.…

Company Q’s attitude towards social responsibility appears to be nonexistent, possibly through ignorance or disconcert. Either way the lack of social responsibility affects their business and community’s perception of their business. It appears that the company management has never developed and ethics program that clearly defines the corporate culture including provisions for social responsibility. Profits, or at least a lack of losses appears to be a primary motivating factor for company Q's management’s decisions. Company Q has been attempting to cut losses by closing stores that were losing money instead of finding innovative ways to increase revenues and profitability for the stores. Based on the known information, Company Q still has ample opportunity to build a socially responsible reputation within the community it serves and at the same time create profits for its shareholders. Simple and cost-effective changes could be implemented in a relatively short amount of time and the benefits to the community, employees and the company itself could be realized within a reasonable amount of time. There are at least three ways that Company Q can make a positive affect within the community that it serves while increasing revenues and profitability for shareholders.…

From the given company information and profile, it seems that Company Q’s current attitude toward social responsibility could be improved. Customers are not only interested in what products and services stores offer, they are also interested in how the companies serve the community. Company Q needs to change a few policies in order to improve their current social standing in the views of their customers. First, closing stores in areas of need is not a customer-friendly policy. Next, offering products customers ask for, but with limited selection and high profit margins is not a customer oriented policy. Finally, refusing to donate day-old products to charity shows a lack of caring for the communities the company serves.…

The Byzantine Empire emerged because of its’ favorable geographic location. It was located on a defensible peninsula which had a natural harbor called the Golden Horn, which provided trading ships to enter easily. It also controlled the prosperous Mediterranean lands, which led to zones of trade, communication, and interaction – especially with Slavic, Arab, European, and Asian peoples and traditions. Its’ location provided it with land and sea routes allowing the Byzantium people to travel easily to Asia, Europe, and Africa. The Byzantine Empire was sustained for almost one thousand years because of its development of Caesaropapism and a complex government bureaucracy. Caesaropapism was created by Constantine which was a system of ruling where the emperor had absolute secular power as well as managing ecclesiastical affairs. The empire produced a large surplus of grain and had a class of free peasants who participated in the army and in turn got land to keep the agricultural economy strong. Craftsmen from this area were known for producing glassware, textiles, gems, jewelry, fine gold, and silver metalwork, and eventually silk, which brought economic success to the Byzantine Empire. Emperors of the Byzantine Empire treated the churches as part of their government. They elected the patriarch of Constantinople, and taught officials to teach their disciples of imperial authority and people’s obedience, as well as following God’s requests. The theme system was also implemented into the governing of the Byzantine emperors.…

John Updike's "A&P" narrates a good story that most of its readers get caught up in the flow and attractiveness of its content. At some point, it can be difficult to tell who is narrating the story. One of the most challenging ideas in starting the investigation of fiction is the story's point of view or its perspective. But a story is decorated with the type, the tone, and the perspective of the voice telling it. Therefore, it is important for a reader to identify the narrator's voice so that he or she can identify and examine what effects that voice has on how they view the story.…

Native Americans should be respected. In his work titled “Making arguments,” Ward Churchill makes an argument about racism and discrimination against Native Americans. The writer in the first part of the essay rants about how sports teams in America mock and discriminate Natives. In his ranting we can find a couple of fallacies. Churchill, in my opinion, does not make his argument good enough to persuade the reader to agree with his views.…

Gun control advocates do have a moral obligation to reveal their true intentions regarding the ultimate consequences and potentially obscure implications of the policies that they espouse. By attempting to prohibit firearms incrementally, yet failing to inform the public of their true intentions, these organizations deceive and manipulate individuals who only support moderate gun controls into unknowingly advancing a cause (prohibition of guns) that they may not necessarily stand for (Kleck, 2001). Moderate gun control supporters are thusly being used as pons by organizations who help them achieve their more moderate goals, only to then move on to more extreme controls that moderate gun control supporters may not have originally supported. To omit information or true intent for the purpose of fulfilling a political goal, however well-intentioned, is deceitful and immoral, especially when the strategy relies on the support of misled individuals supporting more than originally bargained for.…
