The theme park of Disney is well known throughout the globe. The individual who discovers or creates the new ideas for Disney is called Disney Imagineers. With this being said, these individual have to collect a variety of data from around the globe in order to implement them to the Disney Theme park throughout the world.

The Disney Imagineers have to understand what the culture is in the particular country that their theme park is located. A prime example is France when the Disney first established a theme park there.     This study examines how leadership, teamwork, and organizational learning can contribute in making mergers and acquisitions work. Our intention is to identify critical factors and practices needed for merger success. Our research is part of an ongoing project, and builds on previous analysis of merger success/failure in such organizations as Standard Oil, Exxon Mobile, and Time Warner-AOL. In this paper, we turn our attention to the recent merger of Pixar and Disney. In our view, the Disney-Pixar case seems to be a good example of a successful merger in progress. Mergers and acquisitions have been with us for a long time, and represent a normal part of organizational growth and development in the business environment. Through mergers and acquisitions, organizations can gain access to technology, resources, knowledge workers, as well a market share. In 2007, the global value of mergers and acquisitions hit an all time high of $4.5 trillion. This was 24% higher than the previous year. According to Reuters (9/ 21/07), the first nine months of 2007 saw a 37% increase in global M&A activity over the record year of 2006. Although the recent economic recession has decreased the number of mergers, prospects for 2009 are seen as representing good deals and opportunities. Yes, Walt Disney Company should hedge its yen royalty cash flow for the following reasons: JPY royalties grows fast: The Walt Disney Company has been receiving yen royalties for several revenues generated by Tokyo Disneyland. During the fiscal year 1984, yen royalty receipts had been just over 8 billion yen and this figure is expected to increase 10% to 20% yearly over the next few years. Given that the expenses incurred by the company would be paid in dollars, Walt Disney Company would not be able to escape from the foreign exchange risk that it might face. Yen/Dollar rate fluctuation: The current spot rate of 248 yen/dollar represented almost 8% depreciation in the value of the yen from 229.70 just over a year ago. But it has appreciated in the quarter since then. From Chart 1 and Chart 2, we can see that the U.S. inflation has exceeded Japanese inflation for the past 5 years, which indicates the future depreciation of dollar against Yen. Furthermore, the forward rate (Exhibit 5) also indicates the same depreciation of dollar. Given the recent depreciation of the yen against the dollar, it is increasingly difficult to forecast the future value of the yen. Considering the long term trend, maybe it does not need to concern the depreciation of the JPY, but if the appreciation of JPY is lower than expectation will also hurt Disney’s plan. Therefore, it can’t be more precise to arrange comprehensively. How much should be hedged and over what time frame Disney Company receives Yen royalties of 8 billion with expected yearly growth rate of 10%-20% and has its large expenses in dollars. It needs the hedge of currency risk at least 8 billion. Although from Exhibit 3, it is shown that Disney Company has some yen term loan. Through calculation, the yen term loan which will be due of 2/1/93 has 12.5 billion yen outstanding and 765 million semiannual yen (1.53 billion annual yen)…

    The venture into Hong Kong by Walt Disney was a simple example of a large successful western company not doing its homework. The case presents a clear picture of the importance of understanding a foreign market thoroughly before doing business there. Several factors led to an unsuccessful first year of operations and a majority of these factors could have been avoided with a better cultural understanding in the planning stages.
