The producers of this commercial knew its target audience and went after it. It had a strong attention getter. Right from the beginning this commercial had my attention and maintained it throughout the entirety of the advertisement. It had strong appeals to pathos, ethos, and logos. This commercial worked for me, but for others I can see how this commercial came up short in getting their attention. Geico is a car insurance company which has used several advertising techniques that address many of the fifteen basic appeals, described by Jib Fowles, to gain potential customers (Fowles 1). For instance, the need for affiliation has been catered to through advertising depicting Geico as the best there is. People tend to affiliate themselves with top companies. Emotional appeal is catered to primarily; the premise being to invoke the idea that getting Geico insurance will make you happy. A series of “Happier Than” television advertisements were aired (Geico). Each episode portrays a random scenario, followed by two Bluegrass pickers named Ronny and Jimmy, performing a slapstick routine on a small stage. Each event leads to one picker asking a question along the line of, “How happy are people when they switch to Geico?” at which point the second picker delivers a punch line related to the content of the commercial (Geico). The screeching cry of a lost child sounds across the entire building through the crowd of people after a young boy is alone for only a minute. This image comes from an advertisement which includes a gloomy setting showing the sadness of something to appeal to the audience’s emotions. The “Quit Smoking” commercial, produced by Fiona Sharkie, starts with a mother and her child walking together through a crowd of people; toward the middle of the video, the mom and her child get separated making the child very upset and scared. The sadness of the child makes parents feel guilty for possibly leaving their children for good. This advertisement does not use logos because smokers do not often look at logic or they would not smoke to begin with because the box of cigarettes exclaims that smoking causes cancer; therefore, logos would not persuade this specific targeted audience. This public service announcement is a response to the need for change, regarding the distribution of wealth in the U.S. “The latest data shows that roughly 75 percent of the financial wealth in America is held in the hands of the top 10 percent of households. Arguments based on emotion work in different media by getting the audience to feel a sense of what the advertiser is trying to convey. The effectiveness of these arguments differ based on the promoter and what they are trying to present. For example, if the promoter is trying to get a message across through a book, they have to include something that might interest readers. Unlike books, if they are trying to advertise something through television, they include something that might interest people who like watching T.V., such as “couch potatoes” etc. The approach for magazines is different. If someone is already reading a magazine they are in for ads therefore it is much easier to grab their attention. However, arguments based on emotion vary significantly on websites. You can go from a positive response to an extremely negative response in a few seconds, therefore you must be careful. Certain things an ad might portray may go against what someone believes and will instigate “hate” comments which technically may not deserve that type of classification. Others may be able to receive the emotion the ad is trying to present and therefore the ad can be successful. Newspapers are an emotionally colder source than television news in my perspective because when you are watching the news, the reporters can sound a little enthusiastic, delivering the news in a hopeful manner. When reading the newspaper, you can only interpret it how you envision it and so if the tone of the paper is depressing, then it would be emotionally colder.…
