Introduction
My name is Lenie de Boer, Leisure Management student at Stenden University, Leeuwarden. For this report, we had to choose an area at the coast of England, where tourism should be developed. For this report I have chosen Scarborough, because the history of the town was very interesting to me. Scarborough, North Yorkshire is a tourist town at the seaside in the North East of the English coastline. It is a town full of history which is going back to the middle ages, you can still see the influence of the Romans and Vikings in this town. Also the first seaside resort of England was built here. Furthermore, Scarborough is the home to number of thriving business, fishing and service industries. In 2008 Scarborough was named the most enterprising town in Britain and even won the 2008/2009 award for the most creative and inspiring entrepreneurship initiative in Europe. Unfortunately, in the 21ste century, personal bankruptcy at the seaside villages of England hit Scarborough. There are low wages and high unemployment.
Scarborough is a beautiful holiday destination and that is why I would like to find out how the Scarborough seaside resorts can be improved in such a way that seaside tourism will flourish again in this area. I will do this by answering some research questions: First of all why was there a lot of tourism at Scarborough in the past? Secondly why is tourism at Scarborough decreasing? And at last, what makes other seaside resorts in Europe attract tourists?
