Divergent Compare And Contrast Analysis

“Behind every mask there is a face and behind that a story.” Vera Claythorne from And Then There Were None and Tris from Divergent both had to hide their identity to survive. Both of these characters wore a mask shared dark secrets and were trapped. Vera Claythorne and Tris both had to use a mean self persuasion when personal interests become more important responsibilities interests overcome and take over. Each and one of us wear a mask everyday in our lives. We all have reasons or a story behind it all. “The greatest trap in our life is not success popularity or powers,but self rejection”. Like for example Tris and Vera both had complicated emotions and wished things could get better. It’s human nature to feel trapped in your own emotions. Vera was trapped because they made her believe one thing, one thing that led to another that ended up trapping her to her own emotions. Vera being a very intelligent and capable women done some things she wasn't so proud of things that trapped her emotions causing self rejection. Tris on the other hand chose her path, though her path became hard and with
many emotions she seemed to reject herself. Like when Tris say’s “a new place, a new name. I can be remade here, ‘Tris, I say firmly”. This proves that she was rejecting her plain Abnegation name to immure herself into the new world she had chosen. Tris being divergent caused so much emotion and was wanted to be killed leading her to be trapped and wonder what lead her to be what she was, she was divergent. Humans change their persuasion another obtain self acceptable. “EveryBody puts on a mask, including me and you.
We all wear a mask” just like Vera and Tris. Vera wore a mask hiding who she really was an evil person and criminal. She tries to hide her identity by being intelligent and being a capable women. Also by getting an invitation by the island and hired to be a secretary would focus her mind away from what she had done. She believed that she was a lucky girl and that it was the perfect time to forget and get her mind off of the things by leaving and taking the new offer of the job. Tris also wore a mask but to protect herself and to survive because she was divergent and could not let anybody know or else she would get killed. People believed that divergent were different and could fit into more than one group faction and that they wore dangerous. Our society makes us hide from who we really are. It’s part of human
nature. We all hide dark secrets but never can escape from them. Like Vera hides her secret at the beginning and could not escape from it at the end she ended up killing herself. Vera’s dark secret was that she had killed a little boy by letting him drown in the sea. She did this all because she was willing to do anything for her lover and for him to get the money. Vera could not escape from her secret in which she shows us when she say’s “ The sea...So peaceful today..- Sometimes so cruel...The sea that dragged you down to it’s depth. Drowned...Found drowned...Drowned at sea…”. Over all on the other hand Tris hides her secret that she is divergent and doesn't even trust her own person to know or she could get killed. She was afraid and hides her secret by joining the Dauntless group. A group that is brave and shows fearless and determination. We all hold good or bad secrets but it will always be with us. It will never be forgotten.
