1. What is diversity? Why is diversity valued? Diversity to me is a mixture of something, something different. In this case it is difference in culture, race, background and can also be difference in language. To be diverse is to have all of one of the same, but each is different in their own way, such as humans. For example, African American, White and Asian as a nationality are diverse. Diversity is valued in our day in age as we are not all the same and that is positive. We are also a diverse country, so it would not make any sense if we at a work place were all the same and not diverse. Being diverse brings new ideas and different ways people think and improves the business world.
2. What is ethnocentrism? In what ways can ethnocentrism be detrimental to a society? Ethnocentrism is viewing a culture of people or ethnicity from a personal stand point by classifying all as the same no matter what type of personality or individualism. Can also be at a negative level as dislike towards a group of type of people. Ethnocentrism can be very detrimental to society. It can bring division in our society and bring violence with it. It can cause envy and jealousy in cultures and even make someone think their culture is above all and better.
3. Define emigration and immigration. Emigration is when a person or family actually moves from one country to another to immigrate. It’s the actual “move” part. For example, my husband came here to emigrate, moving from Switzerland to the United States. Immigrating is when a person or a family starts to settle in to a country where they are not from. Some may be even doing paperwork as the country requires to migrate in to the country.
4. What are some of the ways groups of people are identified? Some ways people are identified are by the color of their skin, the culture background they come from and the country they were born in. Other ways we can identify groups is by their identity and race, sometimes it is easier to classify by culture as it is easy to put all one culture in one identity. People can also be identified as to what type of religion they are.
5. Why do people label and group other people? Sometimes people label and group people because it is the nature of being human. It is real simple to do this as its natural. People can label and group individuals by their culture, race, religion, or even color. I believe, it is mostly human nature is at fault for why people do this. Gender is another way to group or label others.
6. Define culture. Is culture limited to racial and ethnic backgrounds? Explain. Culture can be a part of traditions, ideas, or can be based on how a person is brought up. Culture can be different traditions or ideas of people whether it is how a family is structured or how they are brought up. With that said, culture is not limited to racial or ethnic background. For example, an Asian individual can celebrate Chinese New Year as well as a Caucasian, and have different meanings to the celebration.

What is ethnocentrism? In what ways can ethnocentrism be detrimental to a society? When I looked up the definition it read, ethnocentrism is the belief in the inherent superiority of one’s own ethnic group or culture (“Dictionary.com”, 2013). I think that ethnocentrism can be detrimental to society because it causes division among people. For example east coast verses west coast. Tupac verses Biggie Smalls. They both thought that they were better than the other because of where they were from, Tupac from the west coast and Biggie from the east coast. Because of how they viewed each other because of what coast they were from it caused division amongst the music community. They’re views ultimately caused their deaths. Ethnocentrism caused division between two men who were of the same ethnicity but from two different…

Some examples that ethnocentrism may be detrimental to a society: The negative effects do clearly exist, [ although the highly excessive forms of ethnocentrism prevalent in the early twentieth century ? which is when William Graham Sumner coined the term ? are not equally relevant today in the twenty-first century. Having coined the term, Graham went on to state that an ethnocentric viewpoint of the world only leads to pride and vanity. This pride often results in being fond of one's own way of life to such an extent that one harbors feelings of contempt towards other cultures. For instance, ethnocentrism within a European society has led to practices such as polygamy and the eating of dogs ? not considered aberrant in certain societies ? to be looked…
