Dialect in America

What is diversity to you? From the streets of San Francisco you are transported into many different countries. You smell different foods, see different looks, and hear different languages. These diverse cultures make San Francisco special. If the city of San Francisco introduced a law to adopt a standard language it would end the diversity that San Francisco stands for. In Northern California we speak our own dialect which consists of slang words such as “hina” and “trippin”.We use code switching when it comes to talking to our friends and family. When I speak to my friends it’s more of a relax and formal language that I speak to them in opposed to when I

We wouldn’t be able to enjoy multi-cultural communities such as The Mission, Chinatown and Japantown, which are communities full of diversity and cultural background. This would eliminate cultural influences in arts and music. According to Dwight Bollinger in “Dialect” he states “The fact in both fields are the same; the size of the bite is what distinguishes them”. Language can be spoken the same but it’s our way of speaking that determines the language. The different approaches to language are being prescriptivism and being descriptivist. A Prescriptivism is language that is spoken by following a set of rules. A Descriptivist is a person that speaks without following the rules of the language and speaking how they want to …show more content…
One Standard English will allow for everyone to to understand each other seeing as everyone will be speaking the same language. It will also ease communication and eliminate any language confusion. Having a Standard English will help develop a proficiency in a single English. America will reduce undocumented immigrants by adopting a standard form of English. In the reading by Amy Tan “Mother Tongue” the author talks about how by having a limited English people don’t take you seriously and don’t understand the words your speaking. Having a Standard English would limit confusion and frustration by others who wouldn’t be able to understand or comprehend a broken and limited English spoken by others but it will cause language elimination and leave us with one language for everyone to speak which will be hard for non-English speakers. A negative aspect that would come from having one Standard English is that we will not have a sense of diversity or be unique in our languages. There will be arrogance and prejudice to the non-native speakers. We wouldn’t have a colorful culture in which we and our children could enjoy. Diversity is what engages us to get to know each other and about one’s background. San Francisco is known for its colorful background with food and language. Language will not change causing it to remain the same and boring. Language will remain stagnant and

Although there are many positive aspects of making English the official language of the U.S. there are also just as many negative aspects. The United States was founded as a country of freedom. Freedom of speech is one of our most important rights in this country. Many people believe that making English or any other language for that matter takes away that right. It would take away the individualism that people love so much in this country. Taking away individualism could also keep immigrants from coming to this country and could force many to leave and go back to where they came from. Affecting individualism in this way could also greatly affect…

The United States is a melting pot of many different cultures. People from all over the world come to the United States because they have the freedom to practice their culture here; this includes using their native language. In Leslie Savan’s book Slam Dunks and No-Brainers: Language in Your Life, the Media, Business, Politics, and, Like, Whatever she included a section called “What’s Black, Then White, and Said All Over?”. This section examines common way of speaking, which Savan claims has its origins in African American vernacular. Julia Alvarez, author of the book Once Upon A Quinceañera: Coming of Age in the USA, also writes about other cultures accumulating themselves into the American…

In “Should Writers use They Own English? ”, by Vershawn Ashanti Young, he argues that there is not simply one standard english but infact there are many languages and dialects that compose the english language. He goes on to provide the solution that there should be more than one dialect or language acceptable in writing (111). Additionally, he argues with Cultural Critic Stanley Fish that standard language ideology creates race inequality between minorities and caucasians because of the inability for minorities to easily master written and spoken standard english (113).…

From the perspective of the opposing side, everyone has the right to their own language. By making English the official language of America the nation would be denying certain rights and services to those who are non-native speakers. Moreover, America is known to be a “melting pot”, a multicultural nation built and maintained by immigrants. It is they who bring with them their multitude of cultures and languages that give the nation its diversity. These different languages and cultures lend to the nation an uncommon uniqueness. Furthermore, as pointed out by Dennis Barron, official English may be unnecessary as “without legislation [the United States has] managed to get over ninety-seven percent of the residents of this country to speak the national language. No country with an official language law even comes close.” He goes on to explain that in today’s era, non-native speakers are learning English “faster than earlier generations of immigrants”. He proposes that, instead of official English, the United States should adopt "English Plus", which would encourage residents to speak both English and another language. By doing this, culture in the United States would be more universal and the U.S. itself…

There are a few scenes in the film where people share what they think about using certain dialects. In one scene, there is an African-American woman who is interviewed and asked whether she uses a vernacular dialect or a standard form of English in her everyday life. Her reply was that she uses both types of dialects during different times of her life. She said that when she is out in public or at her work, she talks in a standard form of English. However, she also said that when she is with her family or with her friends, she talks in her vernacular dialect. This shows that the woman thinks that both forms of dialect are useful depending on the situation.…

I feel that English should be the official language of the United States. Though as I read on some of the articles I understand that there are pros and cons to the factor. Though today in the United States most of our country already speaks English. Which is a factor because more people can communicate with one another if they know English as their language. Other pros that I have read and agreed on is the fact if English was the official language that it would save the government a lot of money for printing other text and materials in a different language.…

Knowing common language is essential for communicating effectively with others. A group of people living in one place or community often speak in one language to ensure that these individuals are able to understand each other. Some countries have become distinct from other countries due to the unique language that is commonly used by its inhabitants. Some nations’ states have declared a national language in their constitution and there are others that did not, especially those countries that have inhabitants who speak different languages. The United States of America is one of the countries that did not declare an official language that is used by its citizens in communicating, but a majority of its states have declared English as their official language. Our founding fathers chose to write the Declaration of Independence in the English language and use that as their mode of communication. The United States is a multi-lingual and multi-racial country, but most of its inhabitants use American English to communicate with each other. Official government documents and the language of instruction in most schools is English, thus, it is most a convenient if government and all of its citizens speak one language rather than being content knowing only the language that they use at home. A move has been made to declare English as the official language of the United States. The said motion is opposed by many people on the basis of its discriminatory nature considering that most inhabitants are multi-lingual. Those who are opposing it failed to realize the benefit that this move will have on some citizens who do not have a perfect command of the English language. The said move will also benefit those immigrants who came from non-English speaking countries and are not fluent in English when they arrive in the country to start a new life. Declaring the English language as the official language of the United States of America will promote solidarity and cohesiveness to all of…

It seems today that Standard English is taking over the world. Standard English is the main language many countries call their national language. Even foreign countries are starting to use the English language more often. The University even offers English Second Language classes so that foreigners can learn English. Everyone in today’s society as we know, speak English. It’s almost universal. The way I see it, is there are 2 kinds of people in this world. People who speak English and people who wish to speak English.…

One global language, so everyone can communicate, so no one is segregated? Well, that is a good point, however there are many reasons why everyone shouldn’t communicate in one language. First of all, everyone will forget their roots, where they belong, where they come from. My cousin, who was 12 years old, lived in India and moved to the US with his parents he couldn’t speak English, he only spoke Hindi. However when he went to the US a couple of years later, he started catching up on his speaking skills in English and a few years later, he was completely fluent in English. That’s good, however he forgot most of his Hindi. He forgot how to write, he forgot how to speak, he could only understand Hindi. It shows how he forgot about his mother tongue and forgot from what culture he belongs, there’s so much more to Hindi, than just the language…

Language barriers have always been a problem for many living in America. There are just too many languages being spoken, and no common ground or national language for everyone to learn and speak to others. Many know English, but some do not and it causes many problems and makes it more difficult to convey a simple point. The US citizens are the ones affected and who understand this problem. Some citizens may deal with these problems on a daily basis, such as those who live in New York City. Because of this, an English only legislation would be ideal for America. Even though, according to those who don’t speak English, learning to read, write, and speak English is very hard, but it would be helpful for everyone to learn the language, not just others. Walking down the streets of New York City you hear so many different languages being spoken. In some small stores or street vendors it is also very hard to ask questions because the workers only know the bare minimum English needed to sell their goods. For those who don’t know English, a benefit for them would be learning a new language. That’s another language for the resume. Obviously having a diverse nation is great, but there are so many more positives when having an English only legislation. Having a national language just makes communicating with everyone in America so much easier. Any individual walking the streets of America will know the language. Purchasing material won’t make people frustrated or angry, they’ll go as planned. Even with an English only legislation, those who choose to speak different languages still can, in private spots such as their home. In the long run, it would definitely help America as a whole.…

There is no doubt whatsoever about English being a global language in these times we are leaving in. It has become the language of communication and technology and any one who does not want to be left behind in all this has no option but to learn it and eventually English speakers in the coming years will increase extremely. This in itself will disadvantage the native English speakers as they will be outnumbered by the non-native English speakers. They will be the only ones speaking one language as they will see no reason in learning a second language. With time the English language will be controlled be the many non-native speakers who will have become competent in it. The language will then diversify into many versions that will then bring about a lesser understanding than it was initially intended.…

There are over 4000 languages in the world. A language counts as ‘living’ as long as there are native speakers alive who use it. Each language represents the culture of its speakers. By learning a new language you can learn about the history and character of its speakers. But what would the world be like if there was only one global language? In this case there would be no cultural diversity between people. Verbal understanding would be better, but the diversification of ideas would cease. While it seems like it would be nice to have a common international language that everyone could use, language is almost always linked to culture, and different dialects of the world language would certainly develop. This is already happening to English, where speakers from England or the US would have a very hard time understanding what they say in Singapore, even though they are speaking English. The variation of languages is thus very important. The number of languages grows as they continue to be discovered in the unexplored regions of the world. A language is considered to be nearly extinct when it is spoken by only a few elderly native speakers. It is the responsibility of ever parent to teach their children their native language in order to preserve their roots and cultural identity.…
