The Jamaican population is located on a island in the Caribbean sea. Jamaica is ranked to be the fourth most populated country in the Caribbean. Jamaicans main language spoken language is an english-based language known as creole or patois. People who have immigrated to Jamaica have brought languages such as, Spanish, Irish, and Scottish. There are also two other significant languages spoken which are Taino and Arawak.
Religion is very important to Jamaicans. Christians make up more than 80% of religious groups. Many practice Rastafarianism which began in the 1930s. Rastafarians believe there is only one true God known as Ras Tafari and that Ethiopia is the holy land. Jamaicans have
many social customs. They believe that if you turn a broom upside down in a corner after a guest has stayed too long, they will soon leave. They also believe that if a bird poops on you it will bring you good luck. There are several other things believe as far as a woman placing her purse on the ground or floor will make her poor.
When it comes to family life, men are considered the head of the household. Women are still highly respected among the Jamaican family. Jamaican couples marry and start living together at an early age. If a couple doesn’t have a baby quickly after marriage, it is considered unusual. The woman is the primary provider while the man is deemed unreliable or not involved in the family. The oldest child is responsible for keeping the family together or intact.
Jamaicans believe that supernatural forces can cause health or illness. They believe any illness that can not be explained by medical help is a result of these forces. For instance if one suddenly falls ill, it is believed that the person is being punished for evil behavior or sin. Such illnesses will prompt them to anoint the body by using rituals, oils, and herbs. They may also recite scriptures from the bible. Some Jamaicans will self medicate before seeing a doctor. They use cultural medicines or natural remedies. They use cultural medicines such as senna, epson salt, castor oil, bush tea, papaya juice and hot peppers. Those who don’t have financial resources mainly use home remedies. They do not use western medicine. They believe that healing comes from the mind, body, and soul and if illness occurs, God will provide a cure. Jamaicans do not trust western medicine. They will hardly ever go to a doctor unless one is unconscious. If anyone dies while under the care of a doctor they assume the person was killed by the use of “white medicine”. Jamaicans believe western medicine is pure poison made from the white man to kill them. A health care professional can show respect to the Jamaican population in a number of ways. One way would be to limit the use of western medicine in the treatment plan of the patient or one’s family member. Jamaicans do believe in the use of unnatural remedies or cures as it relates to remedies or cures.
