Diversity and Race Today
Diversity and race have played a big part of our history and as a society we can learn and grow from this experience. Hispanic and American Latino or Mexican heritage have experienced many hardships during the immigration period to the United States. They originally came here in search of better jobs and housing but found that difficult when trying to gain citizenship. Some have lived here illegally forcing them to be sent back to their homeland. Because of this, many Hispanic people are looked upon as illegal aliens and treated as outsiders.

brought back before WWI, during the Mexican American war, where many Mexican people were thrust into the United States. This was also known as the Mexican revolution of 1909- 1922. After the war, more Mexican Americans crossed the border due to political turmoil and prosperity in the south. Many Americans used this to their benefit while running big companies as Mexicans we thought upon as cheap labors or as undocumented workers who can be easily dismissed when they are no longer needed.
The immigration experience of the Hispanic and American Latino people was different than that of other cultures.
For example, the Muslim and Arab people came to American by following the Spanish Muslims. Earlier, Spanish Muslims followed people into America and made impressions at a world fair, help in Philadelphia, St Louis and Chicago. This is where most people got the first experience of the Muslim culture. Another example would be the Asian Americans. Their immigration is thought to be the most recent of all cultures. Only about 17,000 total came here from 1820-1965. They had a hard time as the supreme court ruled that Asian Americans could not become citizens because they were not White. The immigration laws for the Asian Americans began to drop and the more of the skilled population were allowed in the United States. Among this was a person who spoke English and also had some type of degree of specialty that would be …show more content…
beneficial.
The Mexican Americans have always been treated differently in today’s society. One would say that they have been looked upon as lower class. I believe this to be true as they were forced to take low paying jobs and forced to live in poverty conditions. Members of the Hispanic and Latino heritage have a high rate for low income households and only 17 percent of this race is in managerial or professional positions. Another thing to consider is the language barrier among Hispanics and those of the United States. This is another reason why this culture has so many problems. When communication comes into play, it’s difficult when you cannot express yourself. You will see this in almost many parts of society. Thankfully, we have come a long way and Spanish has turned into a common language for some.
There have been many social inequities for the Hispanic and American Latinos.
As mentioned above, the biggest issue here would be the social status. Since immigration, Hispanics have been forced to take meaningless jobs often working for penny’s on a dollar, they are considered a dime a dozen when it comes to workers. They will work in almost any kind of condition and live in whatever housing they can find, often with many people in the same household. Because of this, people have always judged this race and will probably always continue to do so. Also, the Spanish dialect also plays a part here. Speaking Spanish has always been a big part of the racism suffered. Many people believe that they should speak English if they choose to live here. This will continue until something changes and people become more accepting of
others.
Hispanics and American Latinos make up the second largest consumer group after the non-Hispanic whites. One of every six residents is from the Hispanic heritage. That being said, the race as a whole is becoming more common and accepted. Although we still have many misconceptions, we are learning to grow and learn from one another. Since the population is becoming so large here in the United States, the Hispanic and American Latino group is now responsible for a large profit of consumer spending.
The Hispanic and Latino heritage has come a long way since immigration. We still see some barriers, between different cultures, but that has improved drastically over the years. I feel that people have become more accepting in today’s society, and hopefully this will continue, and we can learn and grow with each other.
