Teaches and educators have a big influence on students in the classroom. One wrong word can alter a students’ outlook on education. If not properly trained, a teacher can say something racially deeming to a child. Something that can prevent teachers from saying something racially offensive is diversity training. In schools, students come from diverse backgrounds. Some teachers do not know how to embrace and interact with different cultures and races; one thing that may
solve this problem is diversity training. In an article titled Are Teachers Prepared for Racially Changing Schools? , the author Erica Frankenbergr , argues “Demographic trends suggest that these schools may soon transition to more diverse student populations and are schools in which it will be important for teachers to have training in order to effectively educate all students” . Students at most schools have students from racially different backgrounds. It is important for teachers to receive training on how to interact with children from racially diverse backgrounds.
Teachers are not the only people who have not been exposed to different races; some students have only interacted with their own race. It is important for students to be exposed to the discussion of race because society is made up of people who come from different racial backgrounds. Erica Frankenbergr argues “Additionally, in schools with homogeneous student enrollments, multicultural lessons are usually the only opportunity to try to educate students about the country’s diversity and the contributions of diverse groups to our society”. It is important for students to be educated about race because it is important for students to know how to interact with people who are different from them. Since the class room is used as a space for learning, the students should not be educated only on the standard subjects but also about racial diversity because it is important to be exposed to it sooner rather than later.
