Diversity Worksheet

Answer each question in 50 to 150 words. Provide citations for all the sources you use.

1. What is diversity? Why is diversity valued?

Diversity can be defined as differences in heritage, race, beliefs, customs, mental capabilities, physical appearances etc. It should be valued because no one is completely the same as anyone else, even within the above categories. If diversity is not valued then it can lead to violence and hatred.

2. What is ethnocentrism? In what ways can ethnocentrism be detrimental to a society?

Ethnocentrism is where a specific ethnic group is brought to attention and centered on, usually as one’s own group. Ethnocentrism can be detrimental to a society, because it can lead to false opinions about the differences with cultures which then can often lead to falsified communication between the majority human beings.

3. Define emigration and immigration.

People who emigrate to a new country often find themselves a minority in that new country. Emigration describes leaving a country to settle in another; Immigration denotes coming into a new country as a permanent resident. For example, from Vietnam’s perpectives the boat people were immigrants from Vietnam to United States, but in the United States they were counted among this nation’s immigrants. 4. What are some of the ways groups of people are identified?

There are four ways in which groups of people are identified: race, ethnicity, religion, and gender. Race distinguishes groups of individuals based on noticeable physical differences. Ethnicity distinguishes groups of individuals based on origin and cultural. Religion distinguishes groups based on groups of individuals that worship faiths other than the more dominant faith of Christianity. Gender distinguishes groups of individuals based on male and females. (n.a., 2012)

5. Why do people label and group other people?

Sometimes when you meet someone for the first time it is easier to label them into a certain group so you know how to identified or interact with them. This is how people do it, but it can become a problem when you do it incorrectly which in some cases can be associated with stereotype. Labeling is not always bad as long as you know how to do it.

6. Define culture. Is culture limited to racial and ethnic backgrounds? Explain.

Culture is a group of people, defined by everything from language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts. Today, in the United States as in other countries populated largely by immigrants. No, culture is not limited to racial and ethnic as many people from other countries are also influenced by the many groups of people that make up the country.
