Background information: John Smith is a thirty year old Caucasian male who recently became homeless. Previously living arrangements, he were living with roommates. He was admitted to the facility after being evaluated by a clinician for suicidal ideation. His last psychiatric treatment was at SBBH in 2010. He has an ongoing struggle with substance abuse for a couple of years. Patient strengths include being motivated for treatment and verbal; however, his weaknesses consist of being homeless, substance abuse, and unemployed. Student asked, “tell me about your childhood memories.” Pt said, “I don’t have any.”
Intern asked, “do you have any siblings?” Pt replied in a guarded tone, “yes, I have one deceased brother.” Student asked, “what did your brother do as a living?” Patient interrupted me in the sentence by stating “I don’t want to talk about it?”
Intern asked questions that pertain to substance abuse. He discloses, “Marijuana has never been a problem, but meth is.”
He asked, “does Medicaid pay for drug rehab.” Intern replied, “I am not sure. That is a question you need to ask your therapist.” Pt said, “you are my therapist.” Intern said, “no, I am the social work intern student.”
Patient asked, “when will I meet with my therapist?” Student said, “she will meet with you after her lunch break.” Student asked, “do you have a preference for drug rehab.” Patient said, “maybe Searcy or in that area. I do not care where I go to drug rehab as long as I get the help.” I asked, “would you be willing to attend AA/NA meetings?” Patient said, “yes, if the meetings are offered at the drug rehab.”
