While people who lie may make their lives better temporarily, after time others find out the truth, ruining the reputation of the deceiver. This is the case of Bob Ewell, the main antagonist of Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockinbird”. Mayella, Bob’s daughter accused Tom, a black man, of rape. In fact, it was Bob who raped his daughter but decided to blame Tom because he would be easily convicted while Bob would get away with it. Eventually, Tom’s lawyer found out the truth along with the rest of the town folks. This ruined Bob’s reputation and he was killed while trying to get revenge on the people that uncovered his true nature.
Sometimes, it is easier to follow one’s emotions instead of reason. In Tolstoy’s “Anna Karenina”, the title character was a married aristocrat who broke the Russian social norms by having an affair with Count Vronsky. Although it was easier for her to follow her heart and start a new life with Vronsky in Italy, Anna encountered great difficulty when she returned to Russia as she was constantly shunned. Her life was easier for a time, but her possessive nature made her paranoid about Vronsky’s actions. For this reason, Anna commits suicide by throwing herself under the train.
