through their clothing/fashion they can show off their individualism and express who they are. Students should not be able to just wear anything, there is a guideline that students should not cross at school. But, when it comes to uniforms students cannot express themselves as individuals and their personality is lost. When students are forced to all wear the same thing they feel as if they all blend in and there is no difference between them and another student. Not only can a student’s personality not able to be shown but students self-image can suffer from uniforms also.
Students should be able to wear what they want to school because when student are able to pick out their own clothing every morning before school they are able to create their self-image.
A positive self-image can help student grow as a person throughout school because what they wear and how they pick what they are going to wear will change and mature over time. A self-image is an “internalized mental picture/idea you have of yourself” which mean anyone of any age can create a self-image so why not start students off young. There are multiple ways a student can create their self-image but something as simple as picking out an outfit for the day can be a key step to creating a positive self-image. Creating a positive self-image is a key part of allowing students to have freedom in choosing what they wear to school but allowing parents to also have the freedom to choose what to purchase as far as school clothing is also a key part of not having
uniforms.
Students should be able to have the freedom to choose what they wear because this will allow parent more leeway when it comes to purchasing school clothes. Sometimes school uniforms could be expensive and parents are unable to pay for these uniforms but allowing parent to dress their child in what they can afford families of lower income can send their child to any school they choose. Parents should not be restricted and forced to only have one option for school clothing and worrying about if their child is wearing their uniform every day. Imagine a parent must leave for work before their child gets ready for school, how would the parent know their child is going to school in their uniform. What happens if the child has to get picked up from school because the student is not wearing the correct uniform to school, then the parent must leave work when this whole situation could have been avoided by not having a uniform at all. Uniforms are an unnecessary aspect for students and are not needed but there are reasons administration feels they are needed in a school. One reason administration could feel as if uniforms are needed are having students wear uniforms can cause less of a distraction and less of a chance of bullying. By students all wearing the same thing students cannot judge or bully another student because the way the student dresses. But in reality, bullying is caused by more than just how someone is dressed or the way the student looks. Students are bullied on the way the student talk, walks, hangs out with, and anything possible therefor forcing every student to wear the same thing will only have students judging other things besides clothing. Kids nowadays will pick and poke at anything possible and it has gotten to the point where even suicide rates are rising dramatically because of bulling and teasing. Instead of trying to make every student look the same, authority figures should talk and communicate with student and find out what they need. Distractions are caused by students wanting and trying to seek attention. When student feel as if nobody cares and are not getting attention by family, administration or friends they will result to bullying or teasing other kids to get attention. Uniforms do not change the way students act and treat other students, they only cover up the fact that every student is different and needs specific attention on a daily basis. There are far more reasons to not have uniform then to have students wear uniforms and at the end of the day helping students grow and develop as a person is essential while in school so when they are sent into the adult world they have sense of themselves as a person. Students should make the choice regarding how they want to dress for school every day because children under the age of 18 already are not given as much freedom as adults. Character development is a key part of children becoming adults and growing up in order to be successful on their own and something as small as a child picking their outfit for school every morning. If a student wears something throughout the day and realizes they don’t like how it looks, fits or feels they will either not wear the outfit again or switch it up the next day and this will keep going on throughout the school year and this will help them get a feel of how they want to feel and be perceived as when they wear an outfit. Students can grow mentally from taking the time to pick out their clothing every morning and learn about themselves regarding what they like and don’t like as far as what they wear. As a student, the decision should b mine as far as what I do and do not want to wear to school and as a parent I should not have to go buy specific pieces of clothing every year that usually cost more than regular clothing because the school wants every student to wear the same thing. Freedom is a right every individual is given and for student this includes wearing what they choose to school every day. Students should not be required to wear uniforms because allowing students to wear what they choose and this can help students show their personality, help students prepare for the future by creating a positive self-image and lastly allowing parent freedom when it comes to purchasing items of clothing for school.
