Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night
Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night” was written by a concerning son begging his father to battle for his life. Dylan Thomas did not want his father to surrender the fight against death. The author states at the end of his poem how he wanted his father to live and defeat death with rage. “And you, my father, there on the sad height, curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night” (Thomas lines 16-18). Clearly, the author wants his father to stay strong, put his armor on, and not give up the fight to stay alive. People need to realize that our light is running out every day. In the poem, the author uses the word “light” to symbolize each person’s life. “Old age should burn and rave at close of day; rage, rage against the dying of light” (Lines 2-3). Thomas indicates as we age, we also get closer to death. He wants readers to show frustration or anger towards the fact that time is constantly running out. This means that people can only get older. Each day that ends takes some of our “light” away until none is left. As humans we cannot escape our fate because death is a part of life. “Though wise men at their end know dark is right” (Line 4). Being aware that death cannot be stopped makes people realize their light should not be wasted. “Because their words had forked no lightning they do not go gentle into that good night” (Lines 5-6). The author explains that no matter what we do, the light will go out eventually. However, Thomas also explains how in life it is much better to have shined the light everywhere and accomplished everything possible. This way, when death comes around peace will be right at its side. If one does not live life with a purpose it can be gone in a blink of an eye. It is important to succeed, do well, and leave no room in life for regrets. “Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, and learn, too late, they grieved it on its way” (Lines 12-13). The author really wants readers to understand that death is something that can happen at any time; death can be completely unexpected, random, or just at the right time. However, those who do not live life to the fullest end up regretting the things they should have done when death strikes. Instead of getting older and stressing about how life is coming to an end, people should work hard at accomplishing all of their goals. This poem tells us that we should not waste our light (Line 6). If we live each day to the fullest why would we rage against death? Focus on using up all your light not letting it go to waste.

Thomas expresses the view that he is ‘half in love with pain’ in various poems, particularly ‘Melancholy’ and ‘Rain’. In both of these poems he seems to resent his troubles but also appreciates them in a rather unusual way. He expresses this by juxtaposing his inner states of joy and melancholy and the outer states of weather and the natural world.…

The poets Dylan Thomas and Alfred, Lord Tennyson both have well known poems about death, Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night and The Charge of the Light Brigade. Although both poems are beautifully written, the two poets describe death very differently with figurative language. Dylan Thomas describes death more as a fight between the darkness of death and the light of life, and Alfred, Lord Tennyson describes death as something that just happens and that it is unavoidable. Dylan Thomas shows the fight between light and dark when he says,”Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light”(Lines 18-19). He is telling his dying father here to fight against “the dying of the light” or to fight the death overcoming…

Both of the poems, “ To an Athlete dying young” and “ Do not go gentle into the night” are referring to the subject of death but show different outlooks and seem to explore the helplessness with growing old and the progress towards death. Although the poems are against death each have a different way of how it should be approached. Both poems show views on how people should deal with death while one sees death as a misfortune, the other sees death as a battle with an enemy that needs to be defeated. “To an Athlete dying young” A.E Housman shows that those dying at the rise of their glory or youth are lucky. Everyone fears death at some point in life. As people grow older they realize that their life was short lived. Both Housman's and Thomas' poems are about death. Also each poem describes death as opponent. Both poems reflect their authors' life experience. Thomas uses irony, villanelle form and symbolism, while Housman uses the elements of irony, multiple meanings and rhythmic tone. An example of irony in To an Athlete Dying Young is the way death is viewed. Usually death is never viewed as a joyous or uplifting event, but here death is proven to be an advantage, as it helps the young athlete make his glory permanent. "Do Not Go Gentle into The Night", by Dylan Thomas is a cry from a dying man's son to arm his reserve and fight against death. Thomas begins by presenting the example of wise men that fight their death valorously, despite knowing that defeat is fateful. Good men also "rage against the dying of the light" is a suggestion that Thomas hopes that his father will take to battle against death. Each man Thomas describes in his poem serves as a character for the type of man Thomas needs his father to be on his death bed. Thomas describes the goods of wise men, who refuse to surrender to death before they accomplish their goals. Good men are next brought up as a example for his father's…

On the contrary of Housman’s poem where the actor seemed to express gratification that death came to him at a time where he was an inspiration for others. When analyzing Thomas’ poem, we read that he is talking about life on the broader sense; that there is more to life than waiting until death knocks you out. On line five, “because their words had forked no lightning (Thomas 5),” it is described as the people who haven’t made a big mark in the world yet. He is trying to illustrate the fact that people should really fight back and do something…

One of the archetypal images Thomas uses is that of the wise old man. “Though wise men at their end know dark is right, because their words forked no lighting they do not go gentle into that good night.” This passage speaks of wise men that fail. The archetypal definition of the wise man is one who possesses the qualities of insight, wisdom, cleverness, a spiritual principle, and much more. But aside from the fact that these men are wise, their words still mean nothing. This passage gives the reader an unmistakable image of darkness in the lives of even those who are wise.…

“Dying of the light” is a metaphor for death and makes you picture a candle or light bulb slowly fading away as a use of imagery. The light represents the life of a person, and when this light is gone it represents the loss of life. You can picture the author being angry and frustrated, just from the use of words and punctuation in the sentence. The pause between “Rage, rage…” just expresses anger, just from putting emphasis on the word “rage”. The author definitely believes that rage is an evil occurrence, and that we should not accept the coming of…
