Nevertheless, a clear comparison can be made between the earlier film’s protagonist, Nola Darling (Tracy Camilla Johns), and Tina’s depiction in her longest scene. Notably, just as Nola’s independence is compromised by the aggressive masculinity of her three male suitors, Tina’s initial tenaciousness in chastising Mookie for his absence is short-lasted, as evidenced by her eventual undressing despite initial protest. Although in both cases, the male characters are far from faultless, they at least demonstrate Lee’s intended three-dimensionality that affords them the agency to “act” rather than simply “react” to others.
