I. Introduction
How does a leader decide which leadership behavior is the best one to use? There are different types of leadership behaviors for a leader to choose from. Here are the different leadership behaviors that leaders have to choose from: directive leadership behavior, participative leadership behavior, supportive leadership behavior, leader reward and punishment behavior, and charismatic leadership behaviors. Each of these leadership behaviors provides a different set of skills, traits, and sources of power.
Can a leader implement more than one leadership behavior at any given time or are they obligated to use only one of the leadership behaviors at a time. Which one of the leadership behaviors carry more weight and provide more for the bang? How does a leader decide which of the five leadership behaviors is the one that is most appropriate to implement? What is the difference between all of the five leadership behaviors?
II. What is Leadership?
At any given time anyone can be thrust into a position to lead, when that time come will they know what to do? In some cases, probably not, but at least they will know the definition of leadership. “Leadership is a process used by an individual to influence group members toward the achievement of group goals in which the group members view the influence as legitimate.” (Howell & Costley, 2006) We all have the ability to influence someone to see things in a way that will assist us in accomplishing what our goals are. As a leader, they may use different methods to reach that point.
