Think about bullying and young children. Do you think that bullying is more apt to happen in a public school setting or a private school setting? Do you think the setting has any effect on bullying, or is it primarily the child 's age? Reflect on a bullying incident that you are aware of. The incident can include you as the victim, the bully, or a bystander. This may even be an incident that was reported in the news of which you are aware. Alternatively, you may share an incident that occurred with your own child or a child who is close to you. How could the situation have been changed or avoided? Bullying is a forceful and aggressive behavior that a person shows towards another person to scare or intimidate someone. Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone …show more content…
physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose(U.S. Department of Health & Human Services(2012). For an example, if a group of children are playing a baseball friend and a new child wants to play; one child yells out “No you cannot play and no one wants you to play”. Modern-day bullying can happen anywhere -- at school, at the mall or on a playground or at home. It can take place over a computer or a cell phone, within large or small groups. (Marusarz, M. Small, J. Tienabeso, S.(Sept. 1, 2010)
In my opinion, I feel that bullying is more apt to happen in public schools.
The private schools are more secure because tuition is paid for the children to attend school. Since parents are spending money for the children to attend the schools the staff and authority is more protective and aware of what is going on. Most of the parents are involved and bring in family lawyers to prevent bullying from taking place. In public schools children are bullied because it is free to attend school and staff members are under paid especially teachers. I have witnessed a teacher bullying a child before. The child is known to have a behavior problem and tended to always get into trouble. One day he decided not to be on good behavior and the teacher said “Well, you have been good all day you must have taken some stronger meds today?” All of the children laughed at him because the children knew he take meds for ADHD and the children knew she used his condition as a joke. The teacher waited until it was a classroom full of children to put the child to
shame.
I believe the setting reflects bullying. If people are in a private one on one setting it is most likely no bullying will take place. Most of the time people bully other people to put another person down or embarrass another person. For an example, if a child is being bullied by someone else the one child who is doing the bullying wants to make the victim feel bad. The bully is going to make sure t is in a setting full of people like a party, game, or dance.
When children are group bullying it is more than likely a ring leader that everyone else is following. I watched a movie called “Singled Out”. It was about a girl who was bullied by her best friend and another group of girls. Her best friend joined in with the group of girls who persuaded her to turn against her best friend. The mother of the victim went to the school several of times to get help for her daughter but the school repeatedly sent the mother back and did nothing because the school did not have a policy on bullying. It got so bad the victim took an overdose of pills to kill her, but it did not stop with the overdose. One of the children videotaped her on the stretcher getting into the ambulance. After the school authority saw the video of the victim the children who were bullying her were suspended. I feel all of this could have easily been avoided if the school had a policy set into place for children who bully others.
As a mother of teenagers, I always talk to my children about bullying or being bullied. I do not want this situation to be a surprise to my children if they are ever approached with this type of situation. I am an educator of young children who has a NO TOLERANCE FOR bullying. Bullying should be taking very seriously. Bullying can lead to depression and low self-esteem in the victim and cause him or her to do something out of the ordinary.
